-24db Average

Hi,
I'm trying to do a commercial for a client, ComCast is requiring that I maintain a -24db avg on the audio. Is there any way to capture this information in vegas, either along the way or at the end of the video. A HOLD function really isn't the average, it's on the peak.

Any help?

I'm running VP10.... I have VP12 but I'm hesitant to do my payhing jobs on it currently.

You are probably referring to -24dB LKFS, the now-legal broadcast limit in the US.
Download the ToneBoosters trial version (it doesn't expire), and use the ATSC A/85 preset. You can use it on the stereo master bus in Vegas, not the surround master.

If by chance they mean -24dB RMS (I doubt it), that is accomplished in Sound Forge normalization.

So where (ideally) should the settings be to conform to the spec (integrated loudness, loudness range, true peak)? Great plug in thanks.

Loudness range is up to you. 4dB for v/o plus music is good, up to 20dB+ for a lightly compressed symphony orchestra. Neither US or European rules regulate compression (this is a misconception based on the incorrect use of the term "loudness normalization").

In the US (ATSC A/85), the true peak target is -2dB, and must not exceed 0dBFS. the Integrated Loudness rule is -24dB LKFS, +/- 1 dB.

I have found that anything meeting the US target also meets the EBU R128 standard (-23dB LUFS), but not always the other way around.

Using the meters is easy. Run through your program (loop twice for a short commercial), and adjust the output gain until TP and ILU are within target range. All you are doing is adjusting gain; you are not asked or required to add or remove compression. I went back and checked all my live event DVDs from 2000-2010, and found they were all broadcast-legal.
