25p in blue ray

fordie schrieb am 01.07.2008 um 08:00 Uhr
hi, just got dvd architect 5 up and running and after a quick look through I see 25p is not supported as a blue ray option.
After checking I see that 25p is not officially supported by the blue ray spec..so can i ask why?
Also having filmed all my work in 25p HDV do i now have to re render as 50 interlaced or can i simply drag the 25p footage into the 25 interlaced project. or should it really be a 50i project, which also isnt listed...confused..thanks..john

It is the blu ray spec, that does not foresee 1080 25p and 1080 50p. The DVDA5 is here restricted, to stay in line with the Blu Ray specs.

What you could do is to change your material to 24p - simply by changing the length of the audio and video events - and create the proect using the Blu Ray 24p template with the mainconcept mpeg2 encoder.

Thanks for the reply yes, that thought had crossed my mind, to change to 24p, but it does seem really strange that 25p is not recognised as dvds have no problem with it and lots of footage is recorded in 25p natively ie xh-a1, dvx100 and sonys own V1, Z1.
Thankfully cineform will do the conversion for me as i capture(if this is the way i have to go)
cheers john

Yes, I agree that this sounds crazy a little bit - there are a lot of camcorders in the PAL world now, that generate footage with 24p. However, the question is not if the DVDA will accept that fooftage withour recompression, but more if the Blu Ray players will accept 25p footage. Some do - for example my Samsung 1400. Others will not do so.

looking more carefully I see it only gives option for 25 interlaced, which I will asume they mean 50i.
Will have to get a re writable blue ray disc to experiment with.

25i is the new nomenclature - and means 50i

What you have available in the menus depends from the other settings - so, if you have 720p, you will also see 24p.

FWIW, if it helps, my understanding is that it's been very common for years to just play 24 fps as 25, or 25 fps as 24. I've only heard/read it was common in Europe, but in the US folks have used it as a poor-man's 24P camera - just use an ordinary PAL camera to start with. ;-) The 1 fps difference isn't felt to be enough to bother with.

it is only an issue for PAL countries - since here the camcorders run with 25p instead of 24p (for the camcorders that offer such a feature). The pitty is, that 24p would make more sence even for PAL countries.
