can Vegas import ATRAC .oma file?

I have a Sony MZ-RH1 minidisc player. Using the provided Sony "Sonic Stage" software I can use it to read in tracks from a minidisc in ATRAC format which are then stored on my computer as .oma files.

Vegas 7c refuses to read these files, although SonicStage can open them ok.
When importing a file, the Vegas error message is (for example):

File C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\SonicStage\Packages\Disc1\001-Skocna.oma could not be opened.

I did notice that the ATRAC files Vegas generates have the .aa3 extension. I tried renaming my .oma file but that did not help.

Does Vegas support the minidisc ATRAC format files?

Note: I was able to convert the .oma to .wav file in Sonic Stage and then use that. But I was hoping to be able to use OMA directly since it was listed as a supported format for Vegas 7...

# Supported File Formats
# Opens: AA3, AAF, AIF, ASF, AVI, BMP, BWF, DLX, DV, GIF, JPG, M2T, MOV, Sony MXF, MP3, MP4, M4A, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video, OGG, OMA, PCA, PNG, PSD, QT, SFA, SND, SWF3, TIFF, TGA, W64, WAV, WMA, WMV

From the promo for Vegas 7:

*Support for opening and rendering ATRAC3™, ATRAC3plus™, and ATRAC
Advanced Lossless™ files, mono, stereo, and 5.1 surround.

Which ATRAC did you use John?

A good question- I have no idea. Whatever the original MiniDisc used to record it in. It is pretty old, maybe the "original" ATRAC? Neither Sonic Stage software nor the MiniDisc hardware actually says anywhere what version ATRAC it uses, at least that I can tell. Is there some utility that will tell which version an ATRAC file uses?

UPDATE: Sonic Stage claims the file is ATRAC3 at 132 kbps. So presumably Vegas 7 should read it?

Wow, I didn't know Vegas claimed ATRAC3 capability. I've not been able to import any ATRAC oma files from my minidisc in any program.

The newer version of Sonic Stage has an option to save as .wav file, although it is only 44khz. Go get a current download if you don't have that option.

Success! It turns out that Sonic Stage defaults to adding "copy protection" to the ATRAC files it saves on your disc. Vegas can't use those files. I unchecked the "add copy protection" box in Sonic Stage Tools->Convert Format, and now the resulting ATRAC3 .OMA file imports without problem into Vegas. Note: I am using SonicStage 3.4.03.15140 which came with my Sony MZ-RH1 player.

Additional note: so far, I can only get this to work in two steps: First, import the track from MiniDisc into the Sonic Stage library. This gives you an .oma file on your computer in a directory labelled something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\SonicStage\Packages\MD 2007-01-09 19_40_52
BUT this file is always copy-protected, as far as I can tell, regardless of your settings, so a second step is needed.

Second, right-click the library file from inside SonicStage and choose "Convert Format..." to either ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus, with the "copy protection" box unchecked. This gives you a new .oma file in another directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\SonicStage\Packages\Optimized Files
and Vegas can read this new .oma file.

All this is a bit of work. Seems easier to convert to WAV immediately, and use MP3 or OGG if you need it compressed.

But is your final ATRAC3/plus file better quality than 44khz? I'll do some experimenting.

Thanks for finding this out!

the ATRAC3plus file is just a converted version of the original 44.1 kHz, ATRAC/292kbps file on the original MD. It sounds the same, no better or worse really.
