Convert Hit Film Project to Vegas Pro?

Jaslan schrieb am 15.01.2022 um 21:45 Uhr

Hi,

Before I got Vegas Pro (on version 15 now, planning to update to 19), I did a project in Hit Film (Express, I think though I don't believe the project formats are different). I see in Vegas Pro 15 that there are some options to open projects from other editors such as, Final Cut, and Premier.

I still have the Hit Film project files and all the media from the project in question.

Is there any way to convert it into Vegas Pro? Maybe if I update to 19, there is a conversion tool in the updated version?

I realize everything may not convert but if I could at least get the alignment of the audio and video clips imported, it would be a good start. I also had some picture in picture, panning, and some titling in it, so if that could import it would be really nice.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide,

JL

@Jaslan Hi, I have Hitfilm Pro & Vegas 19 but use Hitfilm very little, so just had a play with this,

on the media in Vegas timeline right click there's an option to Edit in Hitfilm, once Hitfilm opens i was able to add media to the timeline, save, then back in Vegas if i stretched the media on the timeline the added media was there 👍 Maybe you could do the same but add your project ?🤷‍♂️😊

@Jaslan Hi, had a another go, I created & saved a simple project in Hitfilm Pro, then was able to import it into V19 using the Explorer tab, the transitions added in HF are there but it comes in as one single event on the timeline, If i right click on the event - Edit in Hitfilm the events are separate again in Hitfilm & i can edit them individually, I don't know if this would be the same for HF Express,

That is the way I understand the interoperability between Vegas and Hitfilm is set up to work. You do the Hitfilm things in Hitfilm and the Vegas things in Vegas. Vegas is then capable of rendering the Hitfilm file as if it is a clip on its timeline and also automatically register the results of any further changes made in Hitfilm. I believe this is similar to interoperability with some other programs such as Soundforge. In other words, they are not fully integrated but greatly assist the workflow when working with both. In the end Hitfilm can do stuff with 3D rendering and particle simulation, etc that Vegas cannot, but Vegas remains a great overall editing tool for the final product. @Video_flaneur 👍 Is the main reason i have Hitfilm, so i can import & manipulate CAD 3D OBJ files, then export/save & use in Vegas. 👍

That is the way I happen to use it. However, Hitfilm is designed as a standalone product and there are very many users who are happy to use it as such. I find most standard editing functions (timeline management, transitions, audio etc) much easier and more intuitive in Vegas. However I am likely to use Hitfilm for its Mocha tracking, chroma keying and certainly for 3D files such as OBJ together with animation files etc.

For instance I might create a 3D house in Blender, import that into Hitfilm and add some animated smoke coming out the chimney and clouds in the background. This file might then be put on a track in Vegas where it is combined using picture-in-picture with some real world footage of a person looking out a window at that scene. If I am then unhappy with colour of the smoke or the speed of the clouds I right click on the Hitfilm clip on the timeline, edit it in Hitfilm and save it, and the changes will be registered in Vegas. I believe that Vegas Post (which combines Vegas with a substantial part of Hitfilm) operates in the same way.

It should be pointed out that Hitfilm is not really a tool for creating or serious editing of 3D objects, but is good for placing these objects and scenes in a 3D environment with adjustable lighting, camera adjustments (including depth of field) and addition 3D particle simulations such as smoke, fire, clouds dust etc.

So for me, a typical workflow might involve

  1. Create a scene or backdrop in Unreal Engine (free)
  2. Create objects (and/or combine them with freely available ones) in Blender (free) and combine with UE scene
  3. Import the result into Hitfilm (paid version). This is not trivial getting the textures etc right. Add additional animation like smoke, dust and lighting.
  4. Import the file(s) into Vegas for final combination with real-world footage, narration, music, titles etc.

I don't know if any of this helps.

Thanks for the info and trying to help find a solution. I remember back when I first got Vegas, I played around with the imported HitFilm projects. I think it is mainly meant for compositing with HitFilm in a Vegas project. I was actually hoping to import my project and be independent of Hit Film altogether. It might not be that much work if I have to do it fresh in Vegas. It’s about 15 video clips of me playing a song on guitar that I made in Cubase so getting everything perfectly aligned with the audio was a little tedious but that was the first time. I could probably do it quicker now.
