I have tried to run Vegas on a PIII 1ghz with an RME 96/52, and it does not work. The 9652 does NOT like DirectX apps. I've given up on running Vegas on that machine. Sound Forge seems to run fine, though.

I beg to differ. Works wonderfully for me. NEVER have had problems.

but yours is P3 right?

>>but yours is P3 right?<<

Yeah, sorry man. So was the above poster.. just wanted to "correct" that.

I'll be upgrading soon to a dual AthlonMP setup, I think I'm going to bypass the P4 on this one. I've gotten really used to the feel of dual processors, the UI is so much more responsive when Im doing more than one thing at a time; I dont want to go with Xeon's.

Wish I could help ya out more, all the problems you're having just wear you down after a while. It should be about making music, not searching forums on how to make it all work.

Pipeline, could you post more details on your system and the problem.
I just finished setting up a P4 with XP and a 9652. So far I've had no issues runnig the card using MME as well as ASIO.

Let me know some more details and maybe we could figure it out.

Pipeline, the PC section in the Sound On Sound web forum is generally a very helpful place to ask music-techy questions. I've found anwswers there on several occasions (and provided some, too). Generally worth a nose around the forums there anyway.

The site address is www.sospubs.co.uk (and click on the link to the forums, top right of screen).

I think you'll get a good reponse there.

Sonic IMC, the system is the RME reference PC from RME's website

Asus P4T-e
P4 2.4ghz
Matrox G-550
2xRME 9652 ( or one makes trouble either way )
Seagate barracuda HD's, though now I also have a WD JB drive for audio
TEAC Cd-burner ( tho does the same problem without it)

I am very tired of this

you say works ok in asio ? YEAH it does, however, vegas for unknown reasons doesnt use this spec

everything is fine in samplitude, sonar, cubase in MME mode even or asio, nuendo in MME or asio, and wavelab

I hear this same system has a problem in sf 6 but I havent seen it myself

I tried soundscape mixtereme and even a soundblaster clone and both worked fine in vegas

please, you have started and stopped and started and stopped repeatedly and itr hasnt frozen up ?

can you please try at 48k 24 bit?

if it all works, PLEASE tell me the system specs you are using ?

If this system is incapable of recording and playing at least 32 tracks of 96k, dont bother. I NEED one that will

Now there will prolly be a blame game back and forth between SF and RME , but please all that matters is that youre customers are up and running. We will thank you for it either way

SonyIMC schrieb am 18.09.2002 um 05:04 Uhr
what is your operating system?

Have you installed new drivers?

I used version 2.023 for win2k/XP found right here.

ibliss schrieb am 18.09.2002 um 14:15 Uhr
Pipeline, please give this link the once over.

http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/oct02/articles/pcnotes1002.asp

then consider the following:

does the freeze only occur with high track counts? If you play back a single stereo track does it still suffer the problem?

Have you tried running a cpu meter utility - if so, maybe one of these would show up any 'CPU Spike' problems.

Mike K

Ps - SoFo, have you come across the 'denormal' problem?

You mean JoeD hasn't been able to fix this problem for you yet? Isn't he the one that builds DAWS for a living? You mean after the many of 1000s of DAWs that the almighty DAW builder built...he can't help you with your simple problem? Surely he's seen this problem before!? You would think between someone that builds DAWs for a living and someone that records albums EVERYDAY for a living, that they could put their pea brains together and come up with half a mind to be able to build one PC that functions correctly? It's all just "Plug and Play" isn't it?...lol!!! Maybe you 2 could exchange phone numbers and go out on a date on the short-bus and lick windows together or something?

Too bad.....I just helped a friend out with a similar problem with their P4 DAW. I'ld tell you what we did, but my memory fades quickly in my aging years. I think maybe it's time I have to cut back on the crack pipe for awhile to see if I can rejeuvenate some brain cells.

Well keep us all up to date, how it's going!!!! :-)
PipelineAudio schrieb am 18.09.2002 um 21:04 Uhr
ibliss, thanks for the link. That does look like it could be it, but this happens with no plugins also. ( well I mean the SF track plugins are there even if Im not using them)

this can happen with only 1 track just as readily as 64

if I leave the cpu meter in task manager on, you will see the cpu hit 100 % when this problem happens

I think its important to note that this doesnt happen in any other MME app that I've tried, nor in ASIO apps run in MME mode, nor in any ASIO app

BUT

It also doesnt happen with a soundblaster clone or a soundscape mixtreme

so I guess the blame isnt just in one company

anyway see here for more details

to the Troll:

if you in fact have seen this exact problem and can tell me what to do ( not " buy an AMD dude ") I will promise to put you on ignore, so you can spew your crap without any interruption from me.

SonyIMC schrieb am 18.09.2002 um 22:29 Uhr
the P4 denormal issue is about the only theory going as to why you have issues with the RME and the P4. Do you have a chance to try a newer P4? apperently there might be issues with the first steppings of the processor.

Check out this thread.
http://music.calarts.edu/~majordom/music-dsp/2001-may/msg00470.html

My hammerfall setup is this

P4 2.8Ghz w/Hyperthreading
WinXP SP1
Vegas 3.0c
Hammerfall 9652 feeding a Tango24 with lightpipe
The most number of 48k24bit tracks that I've been able to play w/o hickups is 40.

I've tried 8 in 8 out on one of the hammerfalls lightpipe ports and there were no problems either.

Ill keep on pounding on it and see if we find fixable fault but with no repro for us it is relly hard to solve the problem.

PipelineAudio schrieb am 18.09.2002 um 22:32 Uhr
Sonic IMC what Mobo are you using ?

What would make it work with other cards and what would make it work in other apps , yet the combo in vegas isnt working?

My CPU may be one of the older ones, but it IS the one reccomended by RME
Rednroll schrieb am 18.09.2002 um 22:35 Uhr
LOL!!! Nice P4 blunder, and then they try and hide it....."buy an AMD dude"

40 Tracks!!!!??? I've tested my AMD Athlon 700Mhz to 44 simultaneous tracks playing without hiccups on my 10K SCSI drive and 62 with my EIDE/66 7200rpm.

I think I'll run right out now and buy one of those new P4's!!!!

Motherboard by Intel
Maryville2 (533FSB) with 850E chipset

BTW, these 40 tracks are over a network. I havent tried with local track as I have no media on the machine. Ill copy some sounds over and see the track count then....

Ok I checked out the calarts thread. How do I tell if my CPU is one of the early ones?

Still its weird that this problem only happens on these cards in conjunction with vegas
PipelineAudio schrieb am 19.09.2002 um 09:23 Uhr
this denormalling thing sounds like something that happens when a sound is already playing. In my case it is the very start of playback where the freeze and spike occur
ramallo schrieb am 19.09.2002 um 12:56 Uhr
Hello,

Isn't a sound card problem (I tried with different sound cards), is a audio engine problem.

Ok sonicIMC, I just installed SP-1 for winxp, and the newest version of vegas and checked to see that I had the latest RME drivers

still the same problem

what can I do ?
