Encoding for WordPress Mobile-Friendly "Site"

Soniclight schrieb am 13.09.2015 um 09:05 Uhr
I have VP10e running on Win7 64-bit. But I've been on hiatus in matters video for many months and the last time I tried using Handbrake to make my videos work in JW/Longtail players, I ended giving up for some smartphones and tablets could see and play the videos, others couldn't, and it could vary even within a platform - older iPhones vs. new ones, older Android vs. newer. Most couldn't.

Then a couple of months ago I ran my site through some Google "Is your site mobile-friendly?" generator or tester and the results were dismal: articles and text are tiny, unreadable for a smartphone or tablet views pages differently.

The site is very basic and all done by me from scratch over the last 12 years -- old fashioned HTML, and after talking to my hosting co. guy, he suggested I switch over to WordPress and have it run on their Linux server. This means I've got to re-do everything. Fortunately its a small site with only two public-viewable videos; others are in password protected directories, but in older MP4 and/or even FLV, and so even more un-viewable.

Q:

My current site is this one.
Thanks.

I converted my johnrofrano.com site to WordPress several years ago. The transition was very easy. You create your pages on-line in a WYSIWYG editor in your browser. Couldn't be easier really. Very simple to maintain and it looks good on a mobile device.

One word of caution: Be prepared to have your site attacked all day, every day, by every hacker in Russia, the Ukraine, Korea, and China. WorkPress sites are magnets for hackers trying to take over your site so that they can launch denial of service attacks on other sites. You'll need to immediately create a new admin account and delete the existing one. It's also a good idea to change your admin URL and install a good firewall. I use Wordfence and All in One WP Security. You also need to keep WordPress updated as new vulnerabilities are found every day. It's sad really.

It hasn't stopped me from using it but I just don't want you to freak out when you get messages every day that people are trying to logon to your admin account.

Hi JohnnyRoy,

How about free sites hosted on wordpress.com ?
Will those sites get similarly attacked like you described?

I just giving suggestion to my friend and her community, who want to make a website about their literacy club, and I suggest them creating in wordpress.com for easy editing. Technical coding and HTML tagging will be a trouble for them.

I haven't set up a site on wordpress.com so I don't know if that gives you any more protection. You would think that WorkPress would come with a recommended set of plug-ins enabled to keep hackers out by default but you have to go out and find them yourself.

Just google "setup wordpress security" and you'll set lots of help. WordPress offers this Hardening WordPress web page which is a good start but not for the non-technical. WooThemes has a nice article called Improve Your WordPress Security with These 10 Tips.

Your suggestion to use WordPress is well founded. People with little or no knowledge of the web can easily maintain their sites. I just would not have them set up their own site. Have someone who knows what they are doing set it up and secure it and then just explain to them how to maintain it. Like I said, I don't know how much of this comes standard with the free WordPress sites. I should probably set one up and see for myself. ;-)

I know several people that like Wix.xom and Squarespace.

Just uploading your video to Vimeo or YouTube keeps the video bandwidth off your hosting. There are plugins for wordpress to embed the video as you have it in your site now. There are also some SEO benefits of being listed on YouTube search.

You can add Ip blocks to your htaccess file to block China, RU, and other pathetic internet holes. I use www.ip2location.com/free/visitor-blocker and just paste the list into my httaccess. There are paid plugins for Wordpress that will auto update the IPblock lists.

My apologies for late response, I usually am prompt about acknowledging responses. Truth is the "Life is what happens while your busy making other plans." ~ John Lennon --... uh, happened. But late or not, thank you for valuable info though I'll have to come back to read it more thoroughly due to having had a long day and need down time.
