Intermediate Codec

I am working with a MTS_AVCHD 1080p file and usually render to the Avid NxHD before going to Handbreak but lately I have been using the free Matrox Mpeg2-Iframe HD instead of Avid.
Why? It will play back in default WinMedia player (7), is digested by Handbreak, will open in (free) Lightworks, plays well in vegas preview.
I would appreciate anyones' thoughts on this work flow.
Thank you

Is Matrox only for Mac OS?

There's a set of VFW software codecs for the PC on their site that you can download for free.

The Matrox I-frame codec isn't working in my Vegas 8.0c. Throws an error no matter how I set it up.
I did test the Matrox uncompressed as an intermediate but it wasn't accepted by Handbrake.

Here again are the codecs I tested earlier in the year. With x264, one must always be wary of the 709 colorspace bug we discussed to death earlier (it can be corrected using Avisynth but not HB). The tests were done with AVCHD (not smart rendered MPEG-2). Helix was eventually eliminated because of issue with deinterlacing.
