That's Kenneth Turan. He's been the primary film reviewer for the LA Times for quite a while. He's a real film buff and knows a lot about film history, production techniques, who-s who in the movie business, etc. He gets first pick on what films to review - other reviewers (like Betsy Sharkey) do the films he doesn't want to.

Turan's key criteria for judging a film is always the script and how well the film tells its story. Visuals are not all that important to him - which I always thought was a bit odd since film is a visual medium.

In general if Turan says a film is good, then it is. But if not, it can still be very enjoyable if you like seeing impressive stuff on the screen.
