Mbps in an Mpeg2

I am virtually clueless about the world of codecs. I need to render the highest quality Mpeg2 that i can render. I'm using Vegas Pro 10. I have Douglas Spotted Eagle's book and it says that 8Mbps is the best for dvd. I see the variable bit rate when attempting to customize an Mpeg2 rendering, but for the life of me I can't get the area that says "format" to change from 6Mbps.

Any help on user friendly VBR knowledge or how to change it to 8Mbps or just how to render the best possible Mpeg2 for dvd possible (my Mpeg2 template is DVD Architect Widescreen Video Stream) would be most welcome!

Sidenote: if you need the information, the video is a multi-layered, 27 minute long piece. It's got some animation (brought in from another program), and multiple layers of audio as well.

Thanks!

The average bitrate in the MPEG-2 custom settings determines the final Average Bit Rate. Or you can set a Constant Bit Rate of 8 Mbps (8,000,000).

The problem you will face is that some players will stall at 8 Mbps ABR and many more will stall at sustained 8 Mbps CBR, so "the highest quality Mpeg2 that i can render" means nothing if it cannot be played on home systems.

A sane approach is to follow what the movie industry does (if their discs didn't play, no one would buy them) and encode at 2Mbps MIn, 6Mbps Avg, and 8Mpbs Max.

WRT the material you are encoding, the Mainconcept MPEG-2 encoder is optimized for video content, not animation or CG. In order to get better results from such material, you would be looking at an investment in something like Cinemacraft.

For some really basic info about codecs and bitrates, you may pick up some pointers from my old tutorial:

For some time a used CBR 8 Mbps if space allowed it and otherwise VBR 6 Mbps. But as I didn't see any difference quality wise, I now exclusively use VBR 6 Mbps (Mainconcept MPEG-2) and get excellent results, expecially with HDV source material.
