rendering for broadcast

Greetings.

Can someone tell me exactly what format to render for broadcast?

Background: in the past I have rendered my spots.....720X486, .mov animation quality. Then I sent the file to a local house that made dubs from that file. Now the TV stations want the file directly with a slate...etc.

So, what format is standard...etc?

Same here...

We have exported many spots to tape and sent them to another company to encode(or whatever it would be called) for brodcast. It seems logical that if I knew the propers... I would be able to cut out the 'middle man' and save tons of money. Some of which I hope would go into my pocket.

I have been told that since we don't use professional Avid and use consumer Vegas that we can't output for broadcast. I would LOVE to prove them wrong.

"Now the TV stations want the file directly with a slate...etc."

There are a trillion codecs/formats you could deliver in. Ask them what they want and render it that way.

And vegas can render to the Avid codec--they'd never know. ;)

use the sony yuv codec (it's an avi). careful tho, it'll be about 1.3 G per minute. Did my TV show using this codec.... NIIIIIICE!

And why are they trippin' over the file for? DV is just as good. sheesh. so a-nol.

You're not going to appear any less professional for *asking*. I'm a "professional" and I ask how people want things delivered all the time. How else will you know if they're laying back with AVID (and depending on the revision this can affect your field dominance), FCP (DV? D1?), Media 100, Discreet or a slew of others. Hell, do they want an image sequence? Which format? What color depth?

They've asked you to take them to lunch, and you're trying to guess what they want to eat. Just *ask*! It's a lot safer than ordering them a steak when they're vegatarian! ;)

gotcha....i get what you are saying. Let me frame this a different way.....Is the generally accepted standard for broadcast 720X480 or 720X486?

again...thanks

NTSC broadcast is typically 720x486. That resolution is often reffered to as D1. 720x480 is DV / DVD. Happy rendering! =)

Thank you,...very helpful.

Now ONE MORE follow up question (sorry if elementary).

So, if I understand...it's best when working with Vegas to set it's properties to 720X480 so that the aspect ratios for the dv video are correct...etc.....AND THEN render it out at 720X486....right?

I don't know about 480 vx 486, but i do know that when you render the render settings preempt the project settings. So if you render to 720x486 it's exactly the same as if you had set the project settings to 720x486. If you're going to render to 486 it's probably best to set up the project this way so that you'll be previewing the video the way it will look in the final render.
