Still having problems with Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU

merlin-beedell schrieb am 05.10.2020 um 10:03 Uhr

For some time now - probably back to Vegas Studio 16, certainly in VP17 and now in VP18, I have been unable to use the Intel 520 GPU. The initial VP18 release would crash when using the new AI Style Transfer (thumbnail views) with Intel enabled, but release 334 seems to have fixed that. But the video preview window is just blank! If I select a photo or video that has a different frame size with auto preview, it see it for one frame - then blank. After 5 seconds another flicker as the main video is visible for one frame then blank. I know it's just a little laptop, but it would be nice to zing up the rendering with a bit of GPU!

The Trimmer window is fine. Indeed, when the trimmer window is open, the preview windows displays the current frame. Back to blank if I play the video preview.

Ho well, back to no GPU - when at least it seems really quite stable now - which is nice.

Please tell me if there are specific details about this laptop or VP configuration that might help.

Did you follow the Help/Check for Driver Update?

I also use HD Graphics 520 since years but Vegas Pro (now 18) is working fine here. The driver version installed on my notebook is 27.20.100.8783. Do you use same driver version?

@merlin-beedell Style Transfer is a plugin which only use the CPU. And this plugin is nothing for real time processing in the preview (or an Intel i9 X-Series processor with some limitation to the preview or details).

Ah - I found that turning on the Grid or Safe Area overlays then the video preview window shows the footage as well!! And I have been able to render using an Intel QSV template - though I have not tried a big project yet: Its not appealing to test when it crashes after 3+hours, like VP17 did, unless I used the non Intel templates.

@Marco. Thank you. I used the Vegas 18 Driver Update, and I have the Intel Driver and Support Assistant, that updates the driver about once a month! But it is good to know that it should work, even if my lappy lets me down.

Currently its on 27.20.100.8681, and just installing that 27.20.100.8783 one now.

On my laptop, updating drivers has not helped for the last 2 years, so I am not holding out much hope now. It is probably something I must have installed that is somehow causing this - but I have no idea how to determine what it might be. So I'll resign myself to hope that one day I will get a shiny new laptop (with different issues!).

@VEGASPascal. I'm only reporting my observations - Style Xfer crashed VP when I had Intel GPU enabled, but not without. I can't say more than that - other than the latest update does appear to stop that fault.

Perhaps I should run it in a docker container - oh - that's Linux only. Or a hyperthingy virtual whatsit, so it runs in an untarnished Windows environment!

Did you change something in the settings after installing build 334 of VPro 18 in Video acceleration or File I/O. It's important to set them both to "default", because the program now chooses the right settings for those preferences.

I'm not quite sure which settings you mean - but no, I have not changed anything that I can think of.

File i/o: Ticked - legacy avc & hevc decoding.

Depreciated: allow legacy GPU -> was ticked, now unticked. No change.

fr0sty schrieb am 06.10.2020 um 01:29 Uhr

Uncheck legacy decoding. There's no need to use it unless it causes problems, as it removes decode functionality from VEGAS. What GPU decoder is in use in file i/o? QSV?

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Fingers crossed - but the last Intel GPU Driver update and reboot... and the preview window displays consistently.

PS: In general settings, the "Use QSV (if available)" option is ticked [I had to google to figure what on earth this means. "QuickSync Video = faster transcoding to H. 264". Next search is to understand H264! ]

It was a weird one for sure!
