VMS HD Platinum 10 - Editing Motion JPEG

Probably a very basic question, but I have looked through masses of FAQ's but not found anything.

I have an avi file imported into the PC from a very basic Vivitar movie camera that appears to be in MJPEG format.
It is seen as this by VLC and Vegas picks up the frame rate and will match the Project settings to it. The Project Media is shown as Sony Motion JPEG. The audio plays, but I can see no video. What am I missing here?

Also, I normally work with audio and there I would get all files into uncompressed wave format, edit them as appropriate and then convert to the various distribution formats. I can't seem to find a standard basic "master" format for video that is universally playable and can be edited. Is there one that is best to settle on as the basic working and storage format?

Try installing the demo version of the MainConcept MJPEG codec. It doesn't expire, and there are no limitations on the decoder.

Another free MJPEG decoder is the ffdshow-tryouts codec which works pretty fast with v11 (however v10 might have problems with it due to a bug on Vegas).

XX Edited because of another posting while I was typing!

The Main Concept codec just seems to bring up the first JPEG as a static picture, and it just sits there in the preview screen when I play the file. If earlier I was using the Sony MJPEG codec which just left the previrew screen blank, this is a slight step forward, so thanks.

The machine is running Windows 7, 64-bit.

I've used "Super" in the past. Is that related to the other codec? Some of its audio conversions were a bit distorted, so I have never installed it on the newer machine.
Shouldn't the Sony MJPEG codec that the program seems to be invoking work?
