First I apologize of I wasn't too cool in an earlier post, but this *still* has me upset.
I wanted to post this separately (please forgive) since if there is a possible problem with DVD file handling after installing the beta, folks need to back up their registry, set restore points, whatever beforehand, & don't delete them prematurely as I did. Still can't come up with a smoking gun, but I do know the ATI DVD & File players were working just prior to installation. Of course, the added DVD file handling capabilities I did have may not mean a whole lot to many other folks, so if it doesn't matter to you, just skip to the next thread.
What started this all was a post that someone couldn't open vob files in Vegas 4 beta. Decided to try this on my system to see what was what and found they would import into VV3, though it [the vob file] wasn't a recognized media type in the explorer window. I actually had never tried this before so I don't know what functionality I did have. I thought originally that VV3 misread the vob file type when it imported the test file I made, had associated it's mainconcept encoder/decoder with all vob files. I apologize whole heartedly as this may have been wrong.
VV3 has a couple of registry keys that control what files it recognizes in the explorer window: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\File Format Cache\{AEB1C9FC-78EA-4AB1-AAE7-00AA006BA2BA}] & [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\File Format Cache\{C70B096E-3E7E-4F62-8E1A-00AA006BA2BA}]
The values for "ExtReader" in these keys list the known file extensions for the mainconcept decoder - adding ";*.vob" to the list, VV3 sees and opens at least the test vob file I got from a real quick render in neoDVD std. Whether it would ever open a vob file using another mpeg2 decoder I have no idea, but based on these keys it probably wouldn't have recognized it in the explorer window, & as these keys are mainconcept stuff, there's no place for them in the beta (without anything mainconcept).
[Assuming I get my system fixed in the future - installing the original ATI win98 DVD player & MMCntr & upgrades in XP Pro on a dual boot system stinks so I'll wait for the next upgrade to reinstall everything DVD - And also assuming I can get vob files associated with other decoder software, I'll be able to tell if Vegas can import these devils using some other decoder.]
Skipping the broken ATI stuff for now, I used to be able to drag and drop a vob file into media player or the ATI file player & have it play -- this came in handy if for no other reason then a quick check of what was what. This is the part that had me steamed -- I'm still a LONGGGG way from thrilled. What I can guess after working with the registry several hours, is that one or more settings concerning one or more of the libraries (dll files) that handled this stuff have been changed. A few of the registry entries regarding vob files seem to have no effect what-so-ever, as if references elsewhere to these keys have been overwritten or deleted as well.
I can't get this functionality back through what I consider more proper methods, changing the setting for vob files and such. The only thing that does work Half-a___d is to force windows to use windows media player to open vob files through the file types dialog from windows explorer. Setting this more correctly so that the file types dialog recognized media player as the proper player for vob files, "file open" would work but not "file play"! Go figure... I never could restore drag and drop functionality.
For those that might be interested, while trying to get everything restored I did find that I could get media player to recognize the vob file extention & open these from the std file open dialog - here's the stuff that I used, though you can probably find a bit that's not needed as this was my last resort trying to restore drag and drop & the file open part was just something that happened along the way. DO NOT USE THESE AS IS, without backing stuff up, if you don't know what you're doing.
