A better terminology for the word videotaping?

I hear the term filmmaker used routinely by people who shoot their "films" on various digital, non film media.
These are screened at "film" festivals, and may in fact be transferred to film to qualify.
A documentarian is someone who shoots documentary films, mostly on non film media these days.
Videographer is the term most connected with corporate/promotional videos, though I have yet to find it in spell check.
Then there's the video guy, the person who makes his/her living on the bottom rung of the video/ film hierarchical ladder. The event shooter who does weddings, the speech at the Rotary Club, kids birthday parties and figure skating and ballet.
Is "shoot" too violent a term, as an alternative to videoing (which I don't think is a word.)
Shoot a film, shoot a documentary, shoot an instructional video, shoot a wedding.
A more passive verb may be "film" as it isn't referring to the media specifically but to the action of filming which I believe generically today can mean capturing images to a medium, digital or otherwise by use of a camera.
I like filming, all in favour,....opposed?
