Anyone having problems with Nvidia Driver (466.77)?

marvin-bush wrote on 6/22/2021, 8:36 AM

Updating my driver to (466.77) slowed the response of the video displays and playback of video media players (audio didn't play in sync). I was updating my video driver because I had lost the Nvenc render templates and no GPU listed in preferences after updating VP18to build 527.

I have a Clevo laptop, 6700k CPU with a GTX-980m video card running Win10 Pro ver. 21H1.

From the list of available older drivers, what would be a good choice?

Your comments will be appreciated - many thanks in advance,

Did you add Vegas 18 to the high performance processor under Windows "Graphics Settings?"

The last Studio driver is 462.59 but I don't think the 980 supports that so you're stuck with the gaming driver.

I'd do graphics settings and then reset Vegas if you don't get anywhere with it (hold control + shift on Vegas startup). You'll lose settings but not files or projects.

Indeed, do a full reset and after that don't change any setting in Preferences/Video and Preferences/File I/O.

With driver (466.77) the GPU was listed in preferences and I had the Nvenc templates that were missing. Since I was having problems with driver (466.77) I tried to roll it back but the driver field for rollback was greyed out, so I uninstalled (466.77) and Windows installed (382.05). Things seem to be back as they were with the exception that the GPU is now listed and still no Nvenc templates..

I've add VP18 in the graphics setting and will try uprating the present driver to 466.77 and then try to reset VP18.

I don't think VP18 is at fault with this problem. the problem didn't just affect VP18, it affected any video that I tried to play with any media player that I had installed and the cursor on all monitor screens was sluggish.

Thanks RogerS and j-v

I started out to re-installed Driver (466.77) and while searching for it on Nividia"s website, a new driver showed up in the search results, driver (471.11) with the date of 06/22/21. I installed that driver and it cause me the same problems as (466.77), so I went back to (466.77). Again I tried playing various video clips with different player and the result was the same. The audio would sometimes come and go and/or be out of sync. Some 3840x2160 clips with some fast movement would have large artifacts about the object, I had seen this on the VP timeline also.

After reinstalling (466.77), I tried to reset VP using the Ctrl + Shft at startup, and checking preferences, they looked the same.

No problems were fixed so I went back to driver (382.05).

Things are back as they were, I just don't don't have the Nvenc templates. I wish I had checked to see which driver was being used before I started this.

Does Clevo have any custom drivers they ship the system with? I'd try that instead of the OEM driver and see if it helps. Otherwise perhaps contact their tech support?

I'll look and see, there is a driver disk but not sure if there is anything for the video card on it. I bought this laptop in 2015 and I'm sure there has been several updates.

I still feel that a windows update may have caused this problem because it wasn't that long ago that I let windows update to the present version.

I'll probably made a post asking GTX 980m users which driver they are using..

Thanks again,

mbush

The Clevo website should have current and past custom drivers if you can't find the disk.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind.

Plan to to contact Nvidia to see if they are aware of any compatibility problems.

For the audio problem, my system is incompatible with Nvidia audio drivers, they get installed with new drivers. Video and audio will start out in sync but after some time will be out of sync. My solution is to always remove the Nvidia audio drivers after every update, then system restart

FernC, is that saying to only install the video portion of the driver when updating to 466.77 or 471.11? With the current driver 382.05, Video and audio works fine, the video doesn't look as crisp to me with 466.77 & 471.11.

Thanks,

@marvin-bush
I also install always only the video driver.
Your audio device has to have its own drivers to use, also within Vegas software.

The VGA driver installs its audio driver part as an appendix only for HDMI i.e. a channel to your monitor speakers.

It is not real audio driver and also has nothing to do with sluggish movement or out of sync etc.

I think Nvidia RTX voice needs NVIDIA drivers, so with every driver release I install the video and audio drivers in the hope that it will be fine, but audio always drifts and goes out of sync the longer an app is used so remove the NVIDIA audio drivers

Well, it looks like its time to build or buy. I've spent too much time trying to track down the source of my problem and it may be that there is a problem with the computer itself. This is presently my main computer. I have several recent Acronis backups but I don't trust Acronis or myself well enough to attempt a complete restore unless its totally necessary. I found that Windows display settings shows my #4 monitor connected but inactive. I swapped #3 & #4 display ports an #4 monitor still shows inactive. the monitor works fine with any other HDMI source that I connect to it. This to me is an indication that something else isn't right. So I'll be replacing this computer with a desktop or another laptop.

Thanks everyone for your inputs, they are greatly appreciated.

I suggest you use a handy bit of free software called DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) that will completely get rid of ALL your current installed display driver files. If you have only used the Windows or Nvidia uninstallers there will still be elements of your old drivers files that can cause an issue when installing a new driver. JFYI this DDU also works with AMD drivers too. Then use another great piece of free software called NVCleanstall that will allow you to install just what you require without all the hidden bloatware the Nvidia driver comes with.

That's good info, because while I was trying to find a driver that would work well I installed/uninstalled ten different drivers. Yes, I feel that my system needs to be purged but I don't want to do a clean install or restore of Windows and my configurations at this time.

Thanks,
