background colour

If I use the Pan/crop feature to shrink the picture, it has a black background.

Is there an easy way to change the colour of the background?

Not sure, but if you righ-click in neutral area (ie black) and select 'match output selection' it'll fill to frame.

Sure there is.

Just move the clip that you want to pan & crop to the "Video Overlay" (top) track. In the "Video Track" insert a "Solid Color" background from the "Text & Backgrounds" tab. Strech the background length to the proper size.
