Black Background, not Checkerboard Transparent

I am using Vegas Pro v10. I am working on a project using lower thirds with transparency.

Question: should I see a checker board transparent background when starting a new project (like Photoshop)? I only see a solid black background and am uncertain what setting or file property to adjust.

Right click on the file. Select "straight alpha". That should let you see the "transparent" checkerboard alpha channel. Also check to see if the field order is correct, Vegas generally shows the wrong field order. I shoot progressive and always have to change the properties on files to progressive, as well as the transparency options.
Hope this helps.

Not sure what you mean by "starting a new project" .. if you have not added anything to the timeline .. yes, it will be black. That is normal.

In Vegas the higher video tracks (does not matter if they are video or special effects or still images) take precedence over lower tracks. You add a lower third on a track higher than the video. That image is the one that needs the transparency. You can use Photoshop or it is easy to use the built in text/title features of Vegas.
