@burchis13 - HDR-CX760V

Hello burchis13:

I have my eye on a Sony HDR-CX760V, HDR-PJ760V, or HDR-PJ710V. I noticed in a recent post that you just got one. I'm not really keen on the projector but it comes as a part of the 710V.

So how it is? Love it? Hate it? Footage quality? Overall fit and finish? Is the floating IS all that they claim it is?

I plan on using it underwater (in a housing of course) so very interested to hear how it performs in slightly turbid water.

I welcome any comments. Ever since the Sony store closed earlier this year, I have no way to see one in person.

Regards,

Kimberly

I bought a cx760v & liked it so much I bought another one the next week. I have a cx550v that I wanted to upgrade & this cam was the obvious choice. The cx760, when compared to the cx550v, is better in low light, colors (less washed out look), & the floating eye (IS) works very well. I use the cam on a merlin & it is a fantastic combo. A++ camcorder & I highly recommend it. Only negative, it is a little pricey.

The controls are touch menu & may be hard to operate underwater.

@Zeitgeist:

The various housings on the market give you access to controls ranging from some (Aquatica and Gates) to all (Ikelite).

I've heard rumors about how the floating IS may not focus well underwater, but I haven't been able to find anyone who knows for sure. My first and second choice manufacturers (Aquatica and Gates) have finally released a product, or at least have a release on the calendar. This leads me to believe the floating IS must have focused well enough underwater, otherwise those manufacturers wouldn't have gone through all the tooling and set-up to make a product that they're not going to be able to sell if the word gets around that the camera is no good underwater. Ikelite is always first to market, but they have virtually no tooling and set-up due to the nature of their particular design.

I wish I kew for sure, but sometimes I guess you just gotta click "buy it now" and go with it!

I am very pleased with this camcorder. The video quality is excellent and I am amazed at how well the image stabilization works. I would definitely recommend this camera. However keep in mind that this is a video camera and although it has a 24mb available for photos don't get lured into thinking it is better than a DSLR camera.

@burchis13:

Glad to hear you like it!

No, don't want a dSRL. The dSLRs take beautiful video but the housing set-up doesn't give me the flexibility I need with the diving I'm doing.

So happy . . . off to the B&H site to do some shopping : )

I noticed that auto focus hunts more often than the cx550, but I have not used it enough to be positive of this for sure. I wonder if the floating lens can be the cause of this. I experienced this problem when the cam was unmanned & on tripod 11 feet off the ground, so it wasn't the best way to achieve focus to begin with, but the cx550 seemed to hunt less.

Congrats on your new purchase, I think you will be amazed at the quality of the video and the lightness & smallness of this flagship camcorder.

One more question -- I believe you can disable the IS so that it's locked in place. This is called "active mode" versus "non-active mode?"

CX760? LOVE IT!

I did a side by side shootout between the CX760 and a NXCAM NX70. Did allot of low light tests and lemme tell you, the two are almost identical. (the NX70 is weatherproof and offers more manual control)

Low light sensitivity and high gain and noise control are perfectly the same. (both are excellent) Sharpness? Actually, the CX760 is slightly sharper on the edges wide open. I get the impression that the Ziess lens is slightly better than the Sony G lens.

The CX70 image stabilization is out of this world! REALLY great and something everybody needs to feel when shooting.

Only down side is manual control. You can adjust GAIN, IRIS and SHUTTER....BUT!,...you can't do them all at once. Sony blocked that even on the NXCAM version. (NX30) Unbelievable!

All in all, it's a damn good little camera and makes a great backup cam on multicam shots. (I shoot with a Sony EX1r for the heavy duty stuff and the two can match OK)
