Cannot drag and drop video effects plugins from the manager onto clips

Chuffster wrote on 2/4/2026, 12:07 PM

Hi,

I recently installed Vegas Pro 23 and it's been working great until today. Previously I was able to drag a video plugin/filter from the Plugin Chooser window onto the video clip on the timeline. After a crash this seems to now be impossible - I get the circle with a line through it for a cursor if I try.

I am not running it as admin and I have tried clearing the cache (running with ctrl+shift held). It appears that the Plugin Chooser window is somehow exclusive now and draging an item beyond it's own focus is not allowed.

Anyone out there had a similar experience to this?

Which build of VP23 are you using? I have no issues dragging fx to any clip on the timeline.

When you say "plugin chooser" window, are you referring to the Video FX tab and/or the Plugin Manager? I can drag effects from both to the timeline.

Also, I suggest that you include your computer specs to your Signature like mine below. It can be found in your Profile.

@Chuffster No, you can't drag and drop from the Plugin Chooser window. Only as @Reyfox says.

As @Robert Johnston said, you CAN NOT drag and drop an effect from the Plugin Chooser. In the Plugin Chooser you can add an FX to an FX chain either by double clicking the FX or clicking the ADD Button. When the FX chain is completed, you can AD the FX chain to the event by clicking the OK Button.

That's interesting, because I was able to do exactly that; Drag an individual plugin from the Chooser window to the clip on the timeline. Then later, that became impossible. This is precisely what my query is about.

@Chuffster Show me and I will believe that...I have never seen this possibility, I'm using Vegas since 20 years.

EricLNZ wrote on 2/5/2026, 2:51 AM

@3POINT This is crazy. I can do what Chuffster describes in both my VP21 Build 315 and VMSP17 Build 223.

I'm not good with screen videos but have a poor one done. I'll try and do a better one and post later.

3POINT wrote on 2/5/2026, 3:22 AM

The oldest version of Vegas on my PC is VP15, even there I cannot replicate.

EricLNZ wrote on 2/5/2026, 3:27 AM

Also I don't need to drag the FX onto the Event's FX button. Dragging it onto the thumbnail works.

But I think I've found the answer to the confusion so I don't need to post my video.

It doesn't work from the Plug-In Chooser but it does work from the Video FX window.

Dexcon wrote on 2/5/2026, 3:50 AM

Drag/drop an FX from the Plug-in Chooser does not work for me in Vegas Pro 13 and 15 to 23 inclusive; but drag/drop has always worked from the FX window - ditto with transitions from the Transitions window.

I, like @3POINT am unable to drag anything from the Chooser to a clip on the timeline. I went all the way back to VP18.

As I wrote in the first reply at the top, Video FX tab and Plugin Manager work for "drag and drop". @Chuffster never commented on whether that has worked or not.

That's what we all said...Plugin Chooser (is something different than Video FX Window).

EricLNZ wrote on 2/5/2026, 4:09 AM

I don't normally have the Plug-in Manager showing. I'd forgotten the Window existed and yes for me it does drag like the Video FX window/tab.

3POINT wrote on 2/5/2026, 4:11 AM

Kind of workflow, I always use Plugin Chooser instead of Video Fx Window.

@3POINT Yes again I've learnt something new today!

Reyfox wrote on 2/5/2026, 4:19 AM

@EricLNZ I've resorted to having the Plugin Manager docked because it is neater with listing my effects. The way it is now, with the Video FX tab, every effect is shown in alphabetical order. With the Plugin Manager, they are in their appropriate folders. With Boris FX Continuum and NBFX 360, that list is quite long in Video FX. Boris has about 300 effects alone. NBFX 360 has about 125 effects. These are all listed individually in the Vid FX tab. Folders used to exist in the Video FX tab, but disappeared

@Reyfox  ... I just never twigged to that possibility (Duh!). I also have BCC and NBFX Total FX as well as other plugins like Neat NR, Mocha Pro and Mercalli (not to mention the 3rd party audio FX), and adding the Plug-in Manager to the windows array is going to make things so much easier from now on - it probably will make the FX window redundant. Thank you sooooo much for that brilliant suggestion.

I should add that drag/drop to a timeline event from the window array Plug-in Manager window does seem to work - yay!

The chance would be a fine thing. Obviously I cannot give you evidence because I am no longer able to do it!

What I can do though is assure you that, for a whole day I was working like this :

First clicking on this button on the track header..

Which would bring up the 'Plug-In Chooser' window from which I could drag any listed plugin and drop it right onto the timeline. I was not using the Video FX window.

3POINT wrote on 2/5/2026, 8:56 AM

The only place where I can drag an Fx from the Plugin Chooser, is the chain composition line in the Plugin Chooser itself:

Reyfox wrote on 2/5/2026, 9:21 AM

@Dexcon, a long time ago, in a version far far away, there were folders in Vegas Video FX tab. Then they disappeared. I think it was after VP17 or VP16 when they got rid of the folders. It was always a "feature" request for me to bring them back. We can see that the feature request didn't work. So I went to the Plugin Manager. I've been using it for years, and of course, drag and drop works.

The only reason I use the Video FX tab is to access favorites.

I can only imagine that @Chuffster mixes up the Plugin Chooser with the Plugin Manager, both windows look quite the same. Also from the Plugin Manager you can drag Fx to Timeline etc and with Plugin Chooser you can't.

Than just use the Plugin Manager instead of the Plugin Chooser when you want to drag an FX directly from there on Timeline or Event.
