capturing Hi8 tapes into Sony Vegas Pro 10

Hello,

I'm new here but have used Sony Vegas Pro for more than 15 years.

I have many old Hi8 tapes that I want to import into Sony Vegas Pro 10 using Windows 7 Professional as the OS.

Here are my questions:

  1. Will Vegas Pro 10 accept Hi8 for editing?
  2. If so, what device or software do I need to capture the tape?
  3. Can I edit different formats in the same editing session such as Hi8, MiniDV and JPG?

Thanks for your help,

Bob

Does your camera have Firewire? I would think you would capture via Firewire to DV-AVI. And, yes, you can put any format supported on the timeline.

I've recently been down a similar path but am using a current version of Vegas. The version you have might still have a "capture" function (current versions do not). But you will also need a separate device to connect your camcorder to your computer via USB.

I've been using a product called VIDBOX, but there are a variety similar items on Amazon. If your camcorder has an SVideo output, you would be best to get a transfer device that has that input. These devices typically come with software that will capture your video to your computer, and Vegas won't need to be involved in the process.

I don't think Firewire will be anything you need or want. I believe that will only work with digital camcorders such as miniDV. Your Hi8 is analog.

You're using a pretty old version of Window, so that might be a problem getting the hardware/software needed to do the capturing.

@bob-j7245 You definitely need a converter to do that task, in digitizing it to your computer.... Recently did something similar and this is what i use, did a very good job: ClearClick AV2HD Converter 2.0 https://www.clearclick.com/products/av2hd-converter

The reason why this is my first recommendation, is because firewire connectivity (which would be the best) is very very hard to find nowadays.
