Convert from Stereo to 5.1?

I tried opening a copy of the audio track in Sound Forge, go to properties, change Stereo to 5.1, preview and it sounds great. Close SF & save, it puts the new audio into the Vegas timeline, but with everything in one audio track and the sound is totally distorted.

I tried changing the Project setting to 5.1, adding new empty audio tracks, increasing the busses, messing with the mapping and everything else I could find in Help in Vegas and SF, but always get the same result.

Thanks!

What happens if you use Sound Forge as a standalone app to create and save your 5.1 sound?

What happens when you then import that into vegas with project properties set to audio 5.1?

What exactly do you mean by distorted? Does it sound like overload? What are the peak levels of each channel?

I did some more trials. Apparently changing it to 5.1 in SF results in 5 channels, but all but 2 of them are flat--so sound.

Bringing it into Vegas ends up with only one track with a wave form and it has no relation to what the 2 stereo waves looked like. The sound is distorted to mostly weird noise with a hint of the music that was the original stereo.

I did find a program that says it will convert to 5.1, but I've got too much still to learn about Vegas to get into a new app. Anyway, I realized most all surround playing systems will fill in the missing channels, so I don't think it's worth it to try to convert my project.

Vegas properties in the left menu must be set to 5.1. Default is stereo.
