Cutting unwanted data from wav

JoeDoria wrote on 2/26/2000, 8:25 AM
This may sound simple...but I have to ask....

Is there an easy way to delete unwanted wav data (say half
of a take) ON A SELECTED TRACK (eg. track 3 ....1 minute
into the file) when you have multiple tracks in Vegas?
...without having to select ALL the tracks (eg. if I have a
6 track session)?

I can delete selected clips as a whole (different takes on
a track along the timeline)...but not a "section of audio
of a take of a certain track".

Hope that makes sense. There has to be a way...right?

Or do we really have to keep opening the intended file in
an editor for a simple deletion of wav data?

thanks,
Joe

If I understand you correctly, you have to remember that Vegas only
provides "non destructive" editing of underlying wave files in a
project.

You must use a separate wave editor if you really want to permanently
change an underlying wave file. This is a BIG plus in my book.

If all you want to do is to remove a part of an event in a track from
rendering by Vegas (IOW, the first minute from playback), there are a
number of ways to do that ... grabbing the wave view's "handle" at
the beginning of an event and dragging it to the right to the point
where you want it to start is just one way.

"Splitting" events into sections by putting the cursor on selected
spots in an event and hitting the "s" key, then selecting and
deleting the unwanted sections, leaving the desired sections in their
correct places in time, is another way.

Using the "Trim" window to select and copy parts of events and then
pasting them in the desired locations within tracks is another way.

In each case you end up with with what appears to be only parts of
the wave file (you can always adjust the beginning and end of these
parts with the handles), but you have not really changed the
underlying wave file at all.

In short you get the best of both worlds and a way to back out of
edits that don't work.

About the only time I need to use a wave editor is when I want to
make a permanent change to only certain parts of a wave file without
applying an effect to the whole file . ... like taking the pops and
fricatives out of a vocal track with an EQ filter on just those spots
before rendering it in Vegas.

... and even then I always perform the destructive edit on a copy of
the original wave file in case I screw it up, or decide that I really
didn't want to do that.

Hope this makes sense.

Yes - thank you. It makes sense.

I think the splitting and/or copying what I want from trimmer will do
the job.

But....the other problem is selecting. I seems as though can't
select a portion of an event on ONLY 1 TRACK.

I select, but it selects ALL TRACKS when highlighting where I want to
split (eg. I just want to split an even on track 3...but when
selcting what I want to split...it will split all tracks at that
point in time).

How do I make selections/highlight on just one tracks event (or a
portion of that event)???

I know it must be something simple, but I'm not seeing it.

thanks,
Joe

Sounds like you have your Events "Grouped"?

Do this:

Go to Edit on the menu bar and choose "Select All" with your mouse
cursor, then hit the "u" key ... that should remove all Events from a
group.

You should now be able to select individual Events with your mouse
cursor.

Let me know if that didn't help.

Tip: When I have a bunch of "splitting" to do (like removing long
pauses on a vocal track where nothing is happening) I use
the "Envelope Editing Tool" cursor to make my Event selections. That
way there is no danger of me accidentally moving an Event in time,
which is real easy to do with the mouse if you're not careful. You
can't make multiple selections this way, but it beats accidentally
moving Events when you are in a hurry.

Also be aware that the normal windows conventions of holding the
Shift And CTRL key also work when making mulitple Event selections
with the normal mouse cursor.
