Encoding for and putting video on the web

I’m a pure hobbyist in the process of launching a website/homepage to show some photos of mine. Used to shoot some video a couple of years ago and picked that habit up again this summer (helped a guy shooting some dragracing events) and thought that I could also could show some short video clips. Thought that this should be an easy task to accomplish but after some testing I realise that I have a lot to learn and that I need a good read up. The clips will be between 1 and 5 minutes long. The source will be 4:3, 16:9 DV and HDV clips. I have VegasPro8 and Procoder 3.

I would appreciate your input and thoughts as to the best format, size (both the frame size and the viewing size), bitrate etc to give the best balance between quality and performance. Also I would like some input on how to present video clips (reading, references to literature and/or websites showing clips in a “portfolio” way). I’ve put up a short clip just to see if it worked and although I’m quite happy with the quality of the encoding (the content and the composition is quite poor but it’s a clip basically straight from the cam and just a test) I’m not that happy with the presentation/environment in which the clip is shown (a nice environment may help to make a mediocre clip look decent). For those that are interested the clip can be seen/viewed at HVTFoto (cadillac under the heading Portfolio). I plan to have the site up and running and populated by the end of the year.

It looks like everyone is going to Flash to stream over the web. You can get free players to put into your html code. I have put some video on a free service called brightcove.com. It is all free and works great. After you upload your files they give you the code or link to the video. You also can try wimpy.com this is a player you host on your own website. You will need to convert your video to FLV or SWF files which play in the player. I am setting up Video on Demand for our TV station and FLV and SWF files looks to be the best for video on the web. Take a look at the video on my site it is FLV hosted free from brightcove.com
