Green bar??

Rv6tc wrote on 10/24/2011, 11:29 AM
Trying to render some footage for upload to Vimeo. I tried their suggestion of 640x360, but the quality looked very bad with a lot of aliasing. So I rendered it out as Main Concept mp4, at 480, and a two pass vbr (4,000k avg). The video looks much better but I have a strange green bar on the right hand side. Does anyone know what this is? VP11-64.

Thanks,
Keith

Don't know about the green bar, but it sound like you might need to render to higher qualitiy. What are the stats of your source? Format, framesize, framerate, interlaced, progressive, etc. If you need MediaInfo, you can get it here: MediaInfo

Three different types of files...
.mov @ 1920x1080, 30p
.2t (AVCHD) @ 1920x1080, 30p
HDV @ 270, 30p

The 480 was higher than Vimeo suggested. At 360 it looked too jaggy (a word?) even with higher bitrates.

Thanks Jerry.

If it were me, given your source specs, I'd render to at least 1280x720 30p (at least 8Mbps). Make sure you set a Render Quality of Best. If you do any deinterlacing, make sure you set a deinterlace method.

Here's a tutorial to watch (by our own "musicvid") which also includes "better" methods..

Edit: One more thing, here's the Vimeo Compression Guidelines. The recommend 1280x720 30p 5Mbps for HD.

Keep in mind that Vimeo compresses video lower than 1280x720 at a much lower bitrate... In my tests, it is pointless to upload anything lower than 1280x720 if you want decent quality. It seems Vimeo is mostly concerned about great looking HD content, not SD content.
musicvid10 wrote on 10/24/2011, 1:39 PM
Yes, you should be uploading 1280x720p HD to Vimeo, not standard definition.

The tutorial above exceeds Vimeo's minimum bitrate suggestion a bit, because it optimizes quality for HD source, regardless of upstream processing. Suggest you follow the "Good" method exactly, then progress to the "Better" method if it will give you a bit better quality. With the free Vimeo account, you get one HD upload per week.

Thanks guys. I'll go do it.

MusicVid,

I installed the Avid codecs but QT is not showing up in VP11. QT7 does show up in 10, however.

Rv6tc,

musicvid is our resident expert here, but I have a nice screenshot that might help you configure DNxHD.

Edit: Oh, if you're starting with progressive footage, in step 5 try one of the progressive resolutions (e.g. 1080p 23.976 DNxHD 175 8-bt). Your framerate will be overriden in the render template settings. And in step 6, you'll want to specify "None (progessive scan)"

I also got a green bar, only at 480p.

Thanks Guy, that was driving me crazy.

Jerry. I haven't got to the Handbrake part yet. I'm trying to render the intermediate in Vegas to Quicktime 7 and it does not show up, even though I have it installed. Are you seeing that codec in VP11? It shows up in 10 for me but not 11. By the way, thanks for the suggestiong on the progressive. I was wondering about that, because I mostly shoot in 30p.

Thanks,

Keith

If so, you may be experiencing a problem similar to the Sony AVC Encoder Gone? problem.

However, if you see the Quicktime encoder and do not see the Avid/DNxHD template, then just follow the steps listed in the screenprint above to create your own custom template.

I was very excited for the tutorial on Vegas to Vimeo, and downloaded the Avid DNxHD codec. I followed all the instructions for set-up perfectly and went to 'Render As' and the render status window appeared for about .25 seconds and disappeared.

Is there some reason why I can't render a QT with my Vegas 10? I think I tried that before with the same result (w/o using Avid codec).

Also, is QT the only format I can use with the video to web tutorial?

Any help is appreciated.

Maybe others have some ideas??

That's exactly it. And if I open up VP 10, it is in there.

Keith,

Strange, try this workaround (adapted from the Sony AVC problem).

1) Options->Preferences->Uncheck Automatically open last project on startup.
2) Close Vegas
3) Open Vegas to blank project.
4) Insert a Generated Text Event
5) File->Render As (just to check to see if the Quicktime Encoder is listed as an option.)
6) File->Open->the project you want to render
7) File->Render As. Check to see if the Quicktime Encoder is there

If that fails, I'm stumped.

LOL.... I'll just call you "Stumpy" then!

I tried it and still no QT. At least in VP11.

I've rendered the videos in MusicVid's "good" settings and for now, that will work just fine. I have a feeling the disappearing format will be one of the earlier fixes, so it's all good.

Thanks for trying.
