iPad-Vegas Pro nightmare

sguandal@gmail.com wrote on 8/22/2013, 6:26 PM
Importing into Vegas Pro 12 video clips from iPad3 is easy: however, sometimes they are shown perfectly, other times the video preview is black while the audio is perfect.
I rendered a 40 minute, painfully edited project (1280 by 720) that had a mix of .MOV files from my DSLR and from iPad3, and all the clips from iPad showed totally black (and sounded OK). What's going on????

If your media has audio but no video then you're missing the proper video codec.

Do you have Quicktime installed and is it up to date?

I tried to watch HBO on my microwave, but couldn't get it to work. Then I realized that's not what microwave was supposed to do anyway.

"Then I realized that's not what microwave was supposed to do anyway."

On the other hand, he was trying to edit video in Vegas. Isn't that what it's supposed to do?

Microwave in this case would be the iPad.

It has nothing to do with editing, it barely qualifies as a viewing device for stupid cat videos.

Camera > PC , why throw in some garbage device between those two? And no, iPad's camera does not qualify as a real camera.

As far as the iPad as a camera goes, this fooled some of you a while back:

Which is better - perfect video from the expensive fancy camera you didn't have with you or video from the iPad you did have with you ? Gee, that's a tough one. Seems like a reasonable request to me from the OP - wants to edit video he had in Vegas. Not, it's not perfect video, but then is your camera up to the standards they use for baseball games etc where they can see the drool on the pitcher's chin ?

I really like my iPad as a camera. Yeah it won't zoom, falls apart in low light, is hard to hold steady, can't do shallow depth of field, etc. but the quality of the actual footage is pretty amazing and will cut together seamlessly with the best cameras. Same thing with my Nexus 4 Android phone. Would I use it in a professional project? Hell yeah, but I probably would shoot that part when the client wasn't looking. ;-)

I love how this forum sensors my somewhat harmless words. It makes me sound so much tougher than I really am! ;-)

I did not expect such a flare of passionate comments after my simple request to help with editing in Vegas a video shot (yes, as I didn't have with me my Canon D5 Mark II or Sony HDR-TD30V...) with the iPad3, which BTW has an honest and respectable 1980x1280 sensor.
So thank you to those who respond in my "defense". (And: this is not a professional project, just my vacations with grandkids...). But my question - I regret to say - wasn't really addressed by anyone in any helpful way. So I repeat: can anyone help me understand why is it that such .MOV files behave so rebelliously when imported in Vegas Pro 12.0?

Yes, I do have QuickTime installed, and it's up to date.

I don't have an iPad but I routinely edit video from my son's iphone. Please upload a few seconds of the problem media to dropbox.com or some other upload site and I will take a whack at it.

Thank you! I definitely will. But how do I share the folder in Dropbox with you?

But how do I share the folder in Dropbox with you?

No need to create a folder, just put the clip into the Public folder. Once you do that, right click it, select "Copy public link" and follow the prompt.
If you do want to share a folder with multiple clips, go to your list of folders, right click the appropriate one, select "Share link" and follow the prompt.

FYI, I'm using QT player 7.6.8 and have no problems opening videos that my kids shoot with their iPad or iPhone. Surprisingly enough, newer versions of QT player don't work :(

because iPad like all othe Apple products was designed by idiots with no regard for anything or anybody that doesn't eat, drink, &^$ and $hit Apple.

having said that, just convert these .mov files to something Vegas will ingest. There are some programs that do that, even freebies or at least pretty cheap ones.

Or as can be inferred from the post above mine, try uninstalling Quicktime and installing an older version. This is by the way one of the reasons I have always hated Apple. They just don't test anything and break things with every update to their software. One of the reasons I still keep 5 year old versions of quicktime lying around

I think the codec should be the same no matter how long the recording is?
http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Untested workflow, but just my idea I able to think:
If those recorded media are h.264 video codec and aac audio codec, try convert the media from MOV to MP4, using AviDemux http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/.
The most important thing on doing this is let the video and audio to 'Copy' mode, so there will be no conversion on images inside, only Container is changed.

Sometimes I have a downloadable media files, usually from vimeo, a 'Raw' video in MOV format, and to be readable on media players, including PS3, I put it to Avidemux, convert to MP4, and the players able to play them. I hope this can be the same scenario too for iPad3 recorded videos.

Hope helps,

If Set's rewrapping of the file doesn't work, you could try rolling QuickTime right back to faithful old 7.6.2.

If you use iTunes on your PC it's not going to be happy. iTunes 8.2.1 was the version that came with Quicktime 7.6.2, but you can't buy music etc. with an out-of-date version of iTunes. Firefox and Chrome will also whinge about an out-of-date Quicktime plugin when you reach a page that needs it.
John_Cline wrote on 8/25/2013, 4:37 AM
Well, there is one way to do this...Assuming that you can play the iPad file in the Quicktime player, you can export the file to an uncompressed AVI file using the player.

First, go to "Window" > "Show Movie Inspector" and see what are the audio properties of your iPad file.

Then go to "File" > "Export", choose "Export" > "Movie to AVI", go to "Options" and set the video compressor to "None", then go to the audio setting and set it to "None" and set the rate, bit depth and mono/stereo to match the audio properties of the original file.

Of course, being uncompressed, the file will be huge but at least you'll be able to pull it into Vegas.
bruce2000 wrote on 8/25/2013, 4:25 PM
that will only work if you have paid for the PRO version of quicktime, which no one in their right mind should do on a windows machine! :)
John_Cline wrote on 8/25/2013, 5:08 PM
I bought it years ago, I had kind of forgotten about that.
Laurence wrote on 8/25/2013, 8:15 PM
I've had Quicktime Pro for years as well. I've never seen a downside to having the pro version installed.
