Microphone Always On

Robert Johnston wrote on 8/24/2020, 2:18 PM

I just noticed that when Vegas Pro 18 has the focus, the microphone icon appears in the system tray, Windows 10. Does this mean that Magix is listening all the time? No tracks are armed for record. I turned off the microphone in Microphone privacy settings for desktop apps, but I get a error when I try to playback the video on the timeline, so I had to turn it back on.

Does this worry me? Yes.

If the mic is disbled in the Win 10 privacy settings, it will cannot be activated by any app AFAIK. Can you post a screenshot?

@rraud

"If the mic is disbled in the Win 10 privacy settings, it will cannot be activated by any app AFAIK."

From the Windows 10 Privacy documentation:

"Camera, Microphone, and other privacy settings tied directly to a peripheral device. Some desktop apps may not be affected by turning off these privacy settings. For example, an app that also installs a driver could interact directly with your camera or microphone hardware, bypassing the ability of Windows to control the access. For more comprehensive protection of your personal data associated with these settings, you could consider disabling these devices, such as disconnecting or disabling your camera or microphone."

I've observed on my laptop which is my only machine with a permanent built-in mic, that once a record function is started in Vegas Pro 18, the Microphone icon stays active in the Taskbar as long as that Vegas session is active. On that machine the Microphone icon goes away with Vegas Pro 18. To me, it's a FFIAWT. That is primarily because I consider the laptop to be a FFIAWT.

@rraud,

It's as you say.

What I found is it's necessary to exit Vegas before turning off the microphone in privacy settings, otherwise Vegas will hang when it gets the focus again. When I restarted Vegas 18, I was able to play back the timeline without getting a hang or error message.

Here is the microphone icon in system tray when Vegas 18 has the focus:

This is the where I turn the microphone privacy settings on and off:

@john_dennis Please excuse my ignorance but what is "FFIAWT" short for? Neither Bing nor Google were able to enlighten me.

@EricLNZ Forum Search to the rescue re the acronym. See here, probably a @john_dennis exclusive.

Thanks guys. I would never have guessed and yes probably a JD exclusive which is why I couldn't find it. Or maybe it's US slang.

Seeing that microphone icon pop up in Vegas Pro 18 might seem a bit concerning, right? It's natural to wonder what's going on behind the scenes. Sometimes software settings can trigger these indicators without actually using the mic constantly. Have you explored the audio settings within Vegas Pro itself?
