OT:Cheapest Possible media for distribution

Julius_ wrote on 7/4/2012, 1:44 PM
Hi,

I have a 10 minute company promo (mostly a guy talking) but the client wants it on the cheapest possible media (CD?) because they will be distributing about 5,000 of them to passerby at a convention.
Most probably they will play the median on their computers or home DVD players.

The cost of a CD is about .25 cents here and a dvd is about .80 cents (both printable to hub).

I can keep it 4:3 or 16:9...

Any suggestions about using CDs for vcd?
Thanks

Use DVD. Not all standalone DVD players will play a VCD, plus navigation is not as good. Everyone is familiar with a DVD, not everyone uses VCD.

Quantity of 5000 free?

The lowest price in that volume would be business cards in -CD - shape they can hold 50mb which would be enough for a 10minute compressed file. DO NOT TRY vcd format - instead do a modern compressed file like MP4 variant.

Next lowest $ and with some DVD advantages would be a 3inch DVD - these are availiable at those quantities at discount...the trade-off for a regular DVD size price would be after a pressing of more than 1000. So that could be a go for you.

I normally see DVD prices the same as CD prices. 5k is a lot, who would be printing all those??? :)

Does anyone expect the vast majority of recipients at a trade convention to actually make the effort of inserting a DVD into their P.C/ player once they leave the convention?

Set up a big LCD TV at the convention (assuming the clip is captivating for such a venue), print business cards with a QR code linked to the website page with the embedded vido / Youtube clip etc. Can produce specific QR code for free - just google.

Stand there and have people scanning the QR code with their iPhones and showing attendees.

Hand out business cards printed with QR code - job done. This approach means that with the penetration of iphone / Android units, anyone who really wants to watch the clip can watch right there on the trade convention stand, can be shown it on your iphone or can take a business card abnd scan the QR code immediately. For anyone without a smart phone, simply print the url of the video (embedded?) so they can get access too.

Way cheaper, more immediate, doesn't result in 4890 DVD's going straight into bin.

Just my thoughts.

I'd say the people who watch your video+scan the code would also watch the DVD.

EDIT: if DVD's went to people who seemed interested there would be a better chance of watching, period.

With all the talk about 'NEW MEDIA" it is important to keep in mind some very old rules about marketing. Most people would agree that fancy printed business cards, or business card CD's handed out at booth are both disposables in the game. One costs a few cents, the other a few more.

For the marketeer, it can become a matter of how you are targeting your audience. Printed cardstock might get buried in the holder's jacket pocket whereas a well-thought-out show and tell on the CD might garner curiousity and a growing interest. Gauge carefully what you want to accomplish and how much it is worth.

How about a business card with a QR code printed on it. The customer scans it with their phone and Boom!, they're on a website with the video playing.

Or even a huge freaking QR on the wall of your booth...

Do both, actually. Probably the cheapest solution and way-cool modern. :^D

Who's going to want to watch a 10 minute video on a phone while standing at a booth in the convention? They'd do better to show the video there.

For 5,000 copies, the cheapest alternative is to have replicated (not duplicated) DVDs. That is a lot cheaper than buying DVD blanks and burning them yourself. Not only will it save you on the cost of the media but also on the cost of your time. Additionally, it will look professional.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm not in a position to tell my client how they should market their product.

They came to me to put together a 10 minute video about some kind of process. They will be giving a quick demo (with audience) as well as many, many passer by..I think the event attendance will be over 20,000 over a few days.

I do have a place to replica the DVD/CD, my problem is picking the media..and seeing the VCD is not the way to go, I'll stick with DVD and they will have to pay the cost.
Thanks

WHo'll watch while standing in a convention?

The same people who scan the QR billboards while they're driving down the highway at 70. :p

people :)

There's a live presentation by someone, the DVD is to take away.

It has been my experience that whenever I have given someone a DVD without them asking for it, it never gets watched.

If the process demo at the convention is whiz bang wonderful, and people want to take it home to show the people at the office, it might work.

If the process demo is being done by a knockout 20 year old model, chances are greatly improved. (Tongue in cheek).
