OT: Nero 9 for free.

farss wrote on 8/2/2009, 3:35 PM
Get it from here:
http://www.nero.com/enu/downloads-nero9-free.php

Under restrictions they say:
"This version of Nero 9 contains simply data burning and disc copying features for CDs and DVDs. Additional features and functionality are available with an upgrade to Nero 9 full version."

Strange, most would pay for the version without the malware :)

Bob.

I used to have Nero but now use ImgBurn (and I am much happier). After I removed Nero, I had to manually delete at least 100 entries from the registry and delete several unwanted codecs. Though the offer sounds good, I would be very reluctant to install anything that had to do with Nero, as I fear it might bring with it a lot of unwanted "baggage". But thanks for letting us know in any case.

I didn't have much luck with ImgBurn - kept making coasters, even though I know a lot of people swear by it.

But Nero is certainly a dog. I've had to go into MSCONFIG and deselect various Nero processes at startup. Nero was also thrashing my C drive with its constant indexing. Had to switch that off too. But after all that I still find the most reliable burner.

Another ImgBurn convert here. Works great and the price is right, plus it doesn't keep trying to sell me stuff I don't want.

i've never had issues with nero, but the only thing I used & install is the burning & copying software, nothing else.

I didn't install any of Nero's associated crapware either, but it still added a couple of useless processes and disk-killing indexing.

Me too.

Sounds like this is the one you need if you don't like all the Crapware Nero installs.
Looks to be a very minimal install.

I use both Nero & ImgBurn but I like that Nero lets you use multiple burners at once. Does anyone know if the multiple burner feature is available in the free version?

Another ImgBurn convert.

So much leaner than Nero, and is excellent with creating and burning disk (ISO) images.

After uninstalling NERO 8 there are about 1 hours deleting time worth of files still left in the registry. (well over 100 files) The multiple GUI's do not like Vista.

This is not Nero Burning ROM without the bloatware. This is just two tiny features: Burn Data Disc and Copy Disc. That's it! No burn audio disc, burn DVD, burn iso, no burn anything else. It is basically nagware to get you to upgrade to the full version. It doesn't provide anything more than dragging and dropping files on a blank CD would do in Windows alone. You are much better off with ImageBurn.

I stopped using Nero at version 8 when it insisted on install video codecs that broke Boris RED even through I specifically told it to only install Burning ROM. I use ImageBurn now and does everything I need.

It's too bad that Nero doesn't just sell Burning ROM without the bloatware but they don't and this isn't it. :(

I use nero 9 and I certainly agree that it is very "bloated".

On the positive side.... The latest release lets you convert .ppt to video, which to me was a very nice feature.

I stopped at nero 7.

8 and 9 is just a bunch of bloatware. There are other alternatives now that can do the job better at much less a cost to your system and HDD space availability.

Wow, I feel good about not upgrading after Nero 7. Seems to work fine for me, although if I ever have to reinstall it, I anticipate that registering it will be a nightmare.

ImgBurn here I come...

"I feel good about not upgrading after Nero 7"

I'm still using 6, because 7 smelled like bloatware when it came out. 6 does everything I want, and I don't feel deprived. I have reinstalled 6 countless times with no hassle.

Yet another Imgburn convert here. I paid for the full Nero 9 version, but took it off after I saw how much better the free Imgburn was.

A side note, if you use Slysoft AnyDVD, you must disable it before using either Nero 9 or Imgburn. This is not hard to do. You just right click on the Slysoft icon and deselect the "enable AnyDVD" tab any time you want to burn a disc. Anyway, after a huge amount of time fighting with Nero 9 and a smaller amount of time fighting with Imgburn, I figured out that this was the source of my burning problems.

Yep, i mostly use Nero 6 too. I saw 7 installed on someone else's computer and was appalled that not only was it bloated, but it was nowhere near as easy and streamlined to use. Everything seemed to be idiot buttons. I couldn't find any way to switch it to an "advanced" mode where i could simply drag files to the CD contents window. It was essentially useless. I guess version 6 has something like that with the "smart start" option, but i wouldn't know since i've never clicked it. I always go straight to "burning ROM", which version 7 didn't seem to have.

I, too, used Nero back in its good days. Having had some kind of problem with IMGburn (I forget what), I switched to Ashampoo. Plays nice, almost never makes coasters; incl. ISOs, Blue Ray (which I haven't tried), etc. The free version 6 (which I use) is here:
