There are a lot of philosophies about the process of conducting and filming interviews. One of the executive producers of a documentary I'm working on asked me to write a few blogs on the production process for the film's supporters who aren't familiar with the craft. This is the first, and it's about my process of interviewing. I know the old hands here on the forum know the ropes, but I'm posting it here in case it may help anyone who struggles in a documentary-style interview situation.
And FYI, the subject in the example clip of raw footage I posted is Dr. Glen Stassen, an incredible guy who marched with MLK, fought for civil rights in the South in the 50s and 60s, set the political groundwork for the INF treaties in the 80s, and played a large role in the movement that brought down the dictatorship in East Germany. Also was the originator of the plan floated by John Kerry for Syria to turn over chemical weapons to international forces. He's devoted his life to quantifying methods for peacemaking.
