Pro 18 Edit. Rendering stalls at 27% every time

Tuppers wrote on 6/20/2025, 2:55 PM

Hi Folks,
I'm using the same render settings as for previous projects when I've had no problems. With the current project, rendering repeatedly stalls at 27%. The program crashes and I have to restart my PC.
I have removed the item from the timeline where it stops rendering but this makes no difference. I have also installed the latest build version of Pro 18 Edit from the Magix site in case I have missed an update but the problem persists.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers

@Tuppers Hi, 27% may not be the point Vegas starts to struggle, the program looks ahead as it renders.

  • Try removing a different event or fx before rendering. Do only one at a time so you know which is the problem.
  • Try rendering individual events by double clicking them to add a Region & then use Render Loop Region Only in the render window, or render short sections by adding a Region + the Render Loop Region Only option.
  • Try rendering to a different drive esp if you're rendering to an external USB drive.
  • If your orig files are on an external drive try moving them to your main (C) drive.
  • Watch Windows Taskmanager to see what your PC is doing whilst render. ie. does your RAM get full..
  • Update your GPU driver.
  • Check the Permissions (Properties - Security) of the files you're using.
  •

Thanks for your reply Gid. I'll work through your suggestions and see how I get on

UPDATE

Having spent much of today trying all of the suggested solutions, the problem seems to have been with a couple of video clips which I had copied from an external hard drive. They played with no problem on the timeline and even rendered individually but when included within a larger segment, rendering stalled and Vegas crashed.

The wonders of Vegas eh!

@Tuppers Hi, I'm glad you found the prob cause but there seems to be a bit more to the reason of it crashing, If the two files render ok from the timeline individually but when added to a longer project they cause the crash, that just begs further questions.

If they were copied from an external drive, were they added to the project before they were copied to that drive? Vegas will be referring to the originals on the external drive if so rather than the newly copied files. Try changing the name of the newly copied files, Vegas will say it can't find those files for the project & will ask to update the location or specify a file to use. This will make sure Vegas is referencing the newly copied files.

Are these two files a different format, frame rate etc than the rest of the timeline..

If you're not aware of it there's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo.
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, drag the edges of the window that pops up so it shows all the information & screen capture that page, post that image on here using the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment 👍

Or Copy & paste the information in a new comment like this -

PS. if they render individually from the timeline but crash Vegas when added to a longer project it shouldn't really matter if they are a different format, frame rate etc.. There's nothing that says you can't mix n match different media, it may not be advisable but it's not 'wrong' to do so.

Hi Gid,

This is a large project pulling video files from three different sources. I have to admit that I lost track of where some files came from and where I put them! At one point I even had several events on the timeline which had the same clip twice ie.one on top of the other 😕

For the time being I am content with just finishing the project but thank you for mentioning MediaInfo which I will take a look at when I have the time.

Thanks again.
