Yes, you can customize the Timecode on the timeline. It is under Project Properties.

Printing to tape depends upon your vcr/vtr that you are recording to. Most consumer formats do not allow customized timecode. They default to start recording at 00:00:00

Anybody out there know if a Sony hdr-hc5 will allow for customized time code? It doesn't look like it does, but I'm just hoping for an alternative solution.

Ultimately, I need to get my V8 timeline and a customized time code onto a BETA SP.

The HC5 will not let you do this as far as I know. Well Vegas and the HC5 will not. Sony kit supposedly only supports TC with DVCAM.

One other thing to be aware of is this. If you put your project to DV tape it'll only be either 4:2:0 or 4:1:1 if you live in PAL or NTSC land respectively. You can do better coming from HDV, how much exactly is another matter.
If you render your project to the Sony YUV 8bit codec and send the file to a post house with the good gear i.e. SDI or component to the SP deck then you MIGHT get a better result. You'll certainly get a better outcome from any graphics you've got in your project.

one other question, in case anybody out there has experienced this other problem.

When I try to print to tape, in HD or SD, the result is a tape with the designated color bars, followed by several seconds of black (so far, so good); but then, nothin'...even though the video appeared to be printing to tape during the printing process? Working with the Sony HDR-HC5 on this one, too.

Were you trying to print directly from the T/L or had you rendered the whole project out and were trying to print that?

I do have a HC5 but I've never used it to capture or PTT as I have a VCR. I cannot image any reason why you can't get the HC5 to PTT though. Some more details would sure help.

Well I rendered a project into a DV file, and then put that pile into a timeline, and tried to print it.

fwiw, I can print to my old SD Canon just fine. Everything looks as if it's printing but it never actually prints after the color bars and black. It's odd.

OK, what is the firewire interface in your HC5 set to?
If you're trying to PTT DV it should be in DV I'm pretty certain. Do not use "Auto".
