Timeline Tools for VegasPro a great utility

videoITguy wrote on 2/7/2012, 5:24 PM
When I started using Atari graphics computers for building graphics many many years ago, I learned that sometimes the simplest of utility software add-ons could do major work. I think that is truly the case evident with the latest version of Timeline Tools for VegasPro.
If you have not checked out this utility, I encourage everyone using
VegasPro to give it a try. It has just been updated again with even more useful features.

Just installed it for V11 and V10. Launches fine and looks like it has some great features like the integrated notes feature.

Thanks for this,

MT

Somehow I had missed this, thanks for the tip!

I've been using Timeline tools for a few months now, don't be put off by the fact its free. It really is a very useful tool. Things like the track events section and project notes facility can be really useful and then there's the more in depth functions too.

My pleasure Guy. I'll try to remember to update the link as the tool gets updated.

Version 1.0.31 has been superseded by v1.0.32. Change the "1" to a "2" and try again.

After you click on the downloads page change the last number in the URL (which is the version) to 2 instead of 1.

A note for you Timeline Tools users.

If you prefer using the VASST Notepad editor and you had been using the Timeline Tools Project Notes feature because Notepad wasn't working in later versions of Vegas, you can disable the Timeline Tools Project Notes editor from the option selection list under the Track Tools Tab.

Then, If you start VASST Notepad and restart Vegas, VASST Notepad will open up the Project Notes that were created using Timeline Tools. Note: This works If the VASST option selections are made for using an external file for notes.

Thread Bump:

The Toolset has been rewritten to detect Replaced Media on Timeline Media Bug.

Thanks. That will be very useful. If only it could also do the repair.

Here be the testimonial:

@all users having the Replaced Footage issue: I have just downloaded and installed Gary James' Timeline Tools.

That is perfect. Indeed.

I have some projects where Vegas (11 newest build 382) changed my footage.

Fearing the next time I would present one of my videos and experience the horror of some replaced footage (it really gives your audience some second thoughts about your editing skills) I had to close-watch each and every rendered project after each and every even so small change. Quite time consuming, that is.

Since yesterday I just click Garys Timeline Tools extension and in seconds it checks my project and tells me if there are any replaced footage in it.

In my working project I was aware of one replaced footage - but the Timeline Tools found another one.

This is G R E A T.

Thank you so much, Gary.

Gary,

I tried installing on a workstation that is on a domain network. The installation faulted with a UNC error.

Any thoughts?

Gary James wrote on 7/16/2012, 4:17 PM
Tom, are you saying the INSTALL failed? Or that the program failed to run after installation?

Another thought. Where is Sony Vegas located? On the Server or on your workstation? TLT is trying to install itself in your:

C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Vegas Application Extensions

folder. Since the Setup program provides no way to select a target location (because it's fixed) how are you specifying a server?
monoparadox wrote on 7/16/2012, 4:27 PM
The install failed. "Setup cannot install to UNC pathname. If you are trying to install to a network, you will need to map to a network drive."

Of course, Vegas is running on the local workstation and installed in c:\program files\sony . . . .

I logged on as the local machine admin and it installed okay. However, in my normal logon as a domain user it will not show on any of the Vegas Extensions menus.
Gary James wrote on 7/16/2012, 4:34 PM
That's because your domain login and local login are probably different. As I just added to my original answer, the Extension is located under your local user MyDocuments folder, so you must login with that user ID.

Added thought:

You are looking under the Correct Extension Menu right?
videoITguy wrote on 7/16/2012, 6:25 PM
To monoparadox:
Not sure how your network service interacts with VegasPro - but generally you want to be running Vegas as a local machine admin, hence that is going to cause the install to fail if you are picking to log the domain first. This would be a normal "fail" for processes that are not supposed to be (or are licensed to be) run across network paths.

Must you (or should you) uninstall any previous versions before installing the update?

Thank you,
Bob
Gary James wrote on 7/17/2012, 10:26 AM
It's always a good idea to delete an old version of software before upgrading. But the Timeline Tools installation only consists of two .DLLs and one .PNG image file. So it really isn't necessary. If you do want to uninstall it, simply run the Control Panel / Programs feature, then select Timeline Tools in the list.

However, make sure that Sony Vegas has been closed before installing the update. Vegas has it's Add-In Extensions open until Vegas itself is shut down. So it must be closed before installing any Extension Add-In.

PS. I just placed version 1.0.37 on the web site. I had inadvertently left some test code in the last release that could cause unexpected repositioning of the Vegas Cursor. With the inclusion of the new Cursor Position history list, the Vegas Cursor could easily be repositioned. But this had to be fixed. And it has in the new release.

Which option does this?
Gary James wrote on 7/18/2012, 11:23 AM
When you're looking at the Main Display Grid in the Track Event Info Tab, first select the desired A/V Track from the drop-down track list. Then select the "Show misnamed Takes & Media" filter from the Select Media Type filter drop-down list.

This displays all Events on the selected Track(s) that contain an active Take that has a different name than the media file name that was originally assigned to that Event.
