Vegas Crashes

Matias-Martinez wrote on 6/8/2025, 12:29 AM

Hi.
This is something that also happened to me in version 21:
When I drag videos, some fit and others cause the program to crash.
This happens to me in versions 21 and 22, but it works perfectly in version 17.
Does anyone have a solution?

I'm using version 22 build 250

That happens because something is probably off with some of those video files..... Where these game captures? Please provide exact info about the source and format of those clips.

I already tried the builds 248, 239, 194... and the same thing always happens. How can it be that they can't solve it?

No, they are not bad, because in Vegas 17 everything works without problems, but in this version it does not.

version 17 vs 22, same video file:

In your responses you have not yet answered the question i asked, as for more specific info on those video files..... Anyway, try going into Preferences, and under the File I/O Tab, you will see two options, Enable legacy AVC decoding and Enable legacy HEVC decoding, Disable or enable them, restart Vegas and see if that helps.

What happens when you Import Media into Project Media?

Sorry, that game capture is a 58-minute MP4 video file, 1920x1080, 120 fps, encoded by NVIDIA APP, and weighing 40.7 GB. Audio 196 kbps 48,000 kHz.

legacy AVC decoding and  legacy HEVC decoding were disabled. I enabled it, and that seemed to completely fix the problem.
Thank you so much for the help!
Could you explain why this is happening or tell me where I can read about it?
I'd also like to configure it so it's as optimized as possible.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 6/8/2025, 5:48 PM

Glad that help.... Vegas implemented its own new line of decoders after Vegas 17 that you have, A big part for that was because Quicktime for windows was discontinued, thus you will sometimes have issues with certain files like you are now experiencing, Therefore the solution for this is to enable the old settings, like you have just done.

john_dennis wrote on 6/8/2025, 6:24 PM

@Matias-Martinez said: "Could you explain why this is happening..."

With "Enable Legacy Decoding" checked, Vegas Pro uses the older decoder...

Plug-In
  Name: so4compoundplug.dll
  Folder: C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 22.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\so4compoundplug
  Format: AVC
  Version: Version 22.0 (Build 250)
Company: MAGIX Computer Products Intl. Co.

With "Enable Legacy Decoding" un-checked, Vegas Pro uses the newer decoder...

Plug-In
  Name: mxcompoundplug.dll
  Folder: C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 22.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mxcompoundplug
  Format: MAGIX AVC
  Version: Version 22.0 (Build 250)
Company: MAGIX Computer Products Intl. Co.

You would do yourself and others a service if you would record a few seconds of this type of file and make it available on a cloud share for the Vegas Pro developers to use.

At a minimum, you should post the Mediainfo report of the problem file using these instructions:

Thanks.
I'm using the translator to understand everything you're saying. I'll see how it works.

If you can make a short NVIDIA capture available for download it would be valuable for testing.

I've already solved it thanks to Steve's answer above. But I don't know if it's necessary for anything else.

RogerS wrote on 6/8/2025, 10:25 PM

@Matias-Martinez Steve gave you a useful workaround but you haven't solved it as the newer VEGAS decoder isn't working properly with this type of file. I'd expect the older decoder will no longer be used at some point as it has lower performance and stability.

If you'd like the program to be fixed please support this testing.

It's where I keep the files. Hard Disc 2Tb, Name: WDC WD20EZAZ-22L9GB0, data format NTFS

Matias-Martinez wrote on 6/9/2025, 12:44 PM

I shared the file with Roger to try to force the crash on his VEGAS and find the definitive solution.
We noticed that he didn't experience the crash. So I did the following: I downloaded the file myself, and indeed, it didn't crash.
So I assume it only crashes with the original file, so if anyone wants to replicate it, they should burn it with NVIDIA APP from their own PC.

This video shows how the shared file works fine, and the original crashes:

👆They are both the same file, the first one is the one shared by Dropbox and the second one is the original one.

The problem with replicating the crash is having to download the program and record your own videos.
Keep in mind that the videos I made are always around an hour long (I tried making shorter videos, but they didn't cause any problems).
Besides, the problem wasn't just with THAT video; it's happened to me with many others in the past.

@Matias-Martinez I've used the Nvidia screen capture app for yrs & never had a problem, it creates MP4 AVC which are universally usable, so there must be more to your problem than that?

To me it looks like the one you shared & then re-downloaded is in Downloads on the main (C) Drive, that's easy for Windows/Vegas to access, also there's only a few files in that folder. But the orig you're importing is 40GB on another drive, a WDC WD20EZAZ-22L9GB0 which is a ½ full 2TB HDD drive.

The blue circle of Vegas doesn't automatically mean a crash, it means it's having to think, clicking on the screen may then invoke the 'Vegas is not working' pop-up but as I said it may not have crashed, it's just responding to your prompt..

What happens if you move that orig 40GB file to your main hardrive & then try importing it into Vegas?

I was wondering the same, if it's a bad or slow disk connection VEGAS was waiting on.

RogerS wrote on 6/9/2025, 10:19 PM

It seems that the issue isn't with the file but in the ability of VEGAS to reliably access this hard drive for some reason.

Apparently, when I move the file to the C drive, it stops crashing. It seems that yes, the HDD is the problem. The point is that I bought it precisely for that reason without thinking about what would happen. The C drive is only 1TB.

Not related to this exact issue...
I've also found that sources located on HDD could cause VP crashes.
I used to have 1080p sources for ages (AVC ~30Mbps) and stored then on HDD. Did not have issues.
Not too long time ago I started to record in 4K (AVC 150 Mbps or HEVC 100 Mbps) and when editing them in VP it crashes constantly. Proxies did not help. All these files playes just fine from HDD and the disk utilization was tiny (my HDD can read 220+ MB/s which is 10+ times more than required for 150 Mbps bitrate), so I did not even think that HDD could be an issue.
However, when I tried to move them to SSD, the crashes stopped. So I bought a separate SSD (nvme) for footage and using it since.

This is very strange; I wonder what the cause could be.

Most of my video files are stored on external USB HD drives though I do use VEGAS and Windows on an internal SSD. If a project needs more performance (multicam) I'll move files to a working SSD.

I looked up his HDD and its the older WD ones, and its an SMR drive, meaning its really bad for constant writing speeds. I am guessing Vegas is constantly using the drive which tanks writing performance on the drive.
