Vegas Pro 18 versus .mov file

AAz wrote on 1/20/2021, 8:49 AM

Hello, I have a camera that produces raw content only in .MOV files. I recently upgraded to Vegas 18 Pro, and everything was going along fine, was able to import, edit, render, etc using such files. Suddenly the program stopped allowing me to work with those files. When I import one, it just sits in the Project Media Box, and cannot be added to the editing timeline. MP4s work normally, seems to be just these .MOV files. Can anyone help? I double checked and I do have the latest version of Quicktime installed. Also I checked under Deprecated Features and made sure the Quick Time Plug was checked. Also tested it with unchecked and then I got a message saying the file format was not supported.

What camera do you use?

Also, Mediainfo of your MOV file can be helpful:

You didn't say what kind of file it was.

So I uninstalled Quicktime 7.7, installed Quicktime 7.6, reset Vegas Pro 18, and checked on Enable Quicktime Plugin, and now everything is back to normal. Whatever works as long as it works!

Interesting that you've got x264 (not "raw") in a MOV wrapper.

If you change the extension to .MP4, it "might" open with the native Vegas decoder. Try it and if so, and please post the Vegas file properties as outlined here:

Thanks for the tip, but I would need to uninstall the old Quicktime in order for it to be a real test. As I am under some work deadlines, I cannot do any experiments right now that could potentially cause the software to stop accepting these files again. For now, everything works fine, but I will keep your idea in mind if I ever run into this problem again.

Musicvid wrote on 1/22/2021, 11:37 AM

No, I don't believe you would.

An MP4 extension automatically invokes a whole different set of decoders, Vegas' own, which if it works, would bypass the structurally inferior 32 bit external Quicktime library, and make asset handling quite a bit smoother in Vegas for you, as well.

If you are uncomfortable changing a file extension, I understand. Otherwise, I'll poke around the internet and see what I can find.

I am interested for my own testing purposes, since this an obvious open-source hybrid format from your portable 3D camera, thanks.

AAz wrote on 1/22/2021, 11:44 AM

Oh, in that case, I can do that and just did. Renaming a MOV file to MP4 did load OK, so that is definitely now my backup plan. Thanks!

Musicvid wrote on 1/22/2021, 12:00 PM

Yes, I thought it would.

Now, time permitting of course, would you be able to provide the Vegas file properties I pointed to so we could see just which set of native decoding libraries Vegas chose to open the file?

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

This information may be useful for future feature development in Vegas, as opening in the native library will be vastly superior that what you had been doing.

Thanks again for your patience.

Certainly, thanks for your interest.

Yes, thank you!

This tells a volume, because s04 is Magix' own current 64 bit MP4/AVC decoder. Zcam just did a rewrap of a good open-source codec, and saved itself a ton of $ in licensure agreements.

Thanks again, and I suggest you continue with the renaming trick. Most simply, the QT 32 bit library can leverage up to 4 GB of memory at any moment in time, while s04 can theoretically employ 500 GB! That's why this is interesting to me.
