Vegas Pro 21.0 - Render Fracture

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 8:18 AM

Hi everyone, I hope someone here can help me with this problem. I'm a seasoned user of Vegas 21 (Build 208) and I've never come across it before. I'm attempting to render a collection of PNG's that have been animated to an .AVI file format, however this problem seems to persist regardless of what format I render to.
This is a still frame of what the render should look like:

However what seems to be happening is that the render will take whatever point on my timeline my cursor is currently set to and fracture it in a paused state in the render. Once the render is done, the preview in software will be stuck on a freeze frame of that portion of the video. Doesn't crash or anything like that. But this is the result of the render:

Occasionaly the renderd file flickers, but mostly it just shows this visual. I've tried rendering other projects and they all come out fine. If anyone can help me figure this out, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Instead of importing an AVI created from the png's, import the png's directly into Vegas as an image sequence.

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 10:00 AM

I'm not importing as an AVI, I'm rendering as an AVI. I'm only importing static PNG files.

3POINT wrote on 6/21/2025, 10:46 AM

Who's using AVI for final export?

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 10:50 AM

I am? I need an alpha channel. But regardless of the format I render this project to, it still fractures and ends up unusable.

3POINT wrote on 6/21/2025, 10:58 AM

Png's normally have already alpha channel. I understand that you want to reuse the AVI for further editing, try Prores with alpha channel instead. What are your project settings and resolution of the Png's?

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 11:05 AM

Rendering to ProRes with Alpha results in the same problem.

My Project Settings are set to 1920 x 1080 at a Double NTSC Frame Rate.

Most of the PNG files are at a resolution of 1200x480.

@HaydenLMartin

As a diagnostic procedure:

If you make the project and media available on a cloud share (Google drive, OneDrive, etc.) and share the link publicly or privately, others can test on different platforms to crowd source a solution.

@HaydenLMartin said: "Most of the PNG files are at a resolution of 1200x480."

Is there a special reason that all of the .png files are not the same pixel dimensions, at least within a group that's imported as a unique media event?

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 1:05 PM

It's not a group? It's 22 seperate imported PNG images.

Here's a link to the zip file for the project, containing the .VEG file and all the assets. Hopefully someone can tell me what I've done so wrong that VEGAS is throwing a fit about it.

I tried opening in in VP21 build 315 and it is only showing a black preview for me.

I then tried it in 22 build 248 and got the same results - a black preview.

I did a copy/paste to another instance of VEGAS which lost the transitions and Track Motion changes and all seemed to be fine (minus those changes).

There could be an issue with this actual project.

Using a script that copies over many things including Pan/Crop, I got this error message:

Failed to set bounds. One or more vertices invalid.
   at ScriptPortal.Vegas.VideoMotionKeyframe.set_Bounds(VideoMotionBounds value)

Huh. Thanks Jetdv. I'll try to rebuild it from scratch. Was hoping I wouldn't have to do that, but might as well bite the bullet sooner rather than later.

@HaydenLMartin

I was able to render the project in Vegas Pro 21-315. Here is a link to an AVI with transparency (MagicYUV) and a MOV with transparency in Apple ProRes XQ:

Recieved. Any idea what you did differently?

john_dennis wrote on 6/21/2025, 6:11 PM

I don't think I did anything different than you. I just did it on different hardware with application software in a different state.

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 6:16 PM

Yup, that's basically exactly what I've been doing. And yet... I'll have a tinker around in my settings and prefferences. See if I can't find a way to fix this.

Perhaps in the time you would have spent rebuilding the project, you could rest Vegas Pro back to its factory settings.

(FAQ) How can I reset VEGAS Pro to default settings?

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 6:40 PM

I have done so several times at this point, both rebuilding the project from scratch and reseting my Vegas Pro settings. I also updated my Vegas to Build 315. Nothing changes, it still renders a jumbled frozen mess.

john_dennis wrote on 6/21/2025, 7:37 PM

On the chance that your problem might be GPU related, as a diagnostic procedure, I'd start turning off more recent decoders and GPU decoding and encoding in Vegas Options/Preferences/etc.

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 7:42 PM

I believe I have found the problem, and it's certainly related to the GPU in some way, shape or form, though I'm not entirely sure which setting that I changed did it. I shall report back in a bit.

HaydenLMartin wrote on 6/21/2025, 7:45 PM

GPU Acceleration was causing it. The one setting I just never checked. Turned it off and it renders perfectly fine.

RogerS wrote on 6/21/2025, 8:19 PM

One difference may be John has only the Intel iGPU as his GPU.

One question I have is why the project is interlaced- there isn't interlaced media here? Are you also trying to render out an interlaced file?

Here on my laptop I tried a ProRes 444 render with 21.208 and it got stuck at 26%.

Attempt 2: changed field order to progressive scan in project properties.
Render to ProRes 444 with alpha.
Render failed at 13%.

Attempt 3: interlaced project to MagicYUV with alpha
Seems to have failed at 1%.

Attempt 4: progressive project to MagicYUV with alpha

Attempt 5: progressive project in VP 22.250 to MagicYUV with alpha
Render completed... but resulting file appears blank.

Attempt 6: progressive project in VP 22.250 to AppleProRes 444 with alpha
Same- preview and render are black.

I'm at a loss.
