YOu might want to try going to Options/Preferences and unchecking the
option "Show progress in Video Monitor while rendering". This may
lower the 'load' on your system.

If I understand you: No. AVI is an an editable file format. It can
be read, and created from scratch, but not modified in place.

If you are talking about not re-compressing the video frames. We are
working on adding this in Vegas 2.0. This turns out to be quite a
difficult problem to solve in the general case, so no promises.

Realtime would depend on your machine, if you can play without
dropping frames AND have about 30% of your machine left over.
I would expect that you could edit cuts only in realtime.

One again, PROVIDED that no-recompression makes it. No gurantees.
