WOT: Sony's new point & shoot, the RX100

I bought one of these for the better half and wow, we could have a bit of domestic discord to deal with. I just didn't realise fully how capable this little camera is, even for shooting video. Review below covers most of it.

There's more, such as a "autocompose", it actually seems to work pretty well.
What I really like is in full auto it does an exceptionally good job, it doesn't have a zillion buttons to intimidate the user or the natives but gives up almost nothing for those who want to take control.
Well done Sony, yes this camera comes at a premium price but unlike a lot of Sony products of late you do get something for the premium price. Hopefully this is another indication that Sony has turned a corner.

"but seems to shoot only ntsc frame rates?"

No, mine...I mean the wife's, shoots either 50i at two bitrates or 50p at one bitrate, no NTSC option. Which is curious as the model number on the camera has no suffix to denote region.
In video mode it has a pretty impressive display including a spirit level so no more canted shots. It also display shutter speed and lens data. Even more remarkable, it gets the shutter speed right for 50i at 1/50, not even the EX1/3 can manage that.

that's good to know - was going off dpreview. strange that most dslrs only state ntsc frame rates even when they do have pal rates, or pal models....

When I got my RX100 2 weeks ago I taped it onto a board together with my Sony HDR CX700 consumer high end video camera and carried them around doing a 15 minutes unscientific video test.

The footage that I compared (split screen via Vegas) was 1080 50i at 24 Mbps - and the RX100 gave a slightly clearer and sharper result than the CX700. IMHO, that is.

Wonder if Sony is gonna make future video cameras with this - so called - 1" sensor?
