OT - Best $1500 camcorder
My opinion for now -- the Canon HG10, with it's larger 1920X1080 pixels and incredible low-light capability. You might have to trick it out with a lens hood that makes it look more impressive -- but it IS impressive. I used it's little brother (Vixia M40) to film my nieces wedding about 5 months ago and I was blown away by it's low-light capabilities and ability to capture a broad spectrum of highlights and darks in the same frame. Even in the darkest areas of the reception where I couldn't help but get some noise I was still able to bring out the colors beautifully. I tried the HG10 and was impressed by it's ease of use. It has a lot of features the M40 didn't (better wider angle lens, etc) but the sensors are the same. If you can talk to your clients about "miniaturization of components", "larger pixels on the sensor," "superior capture of highlights and darks," etc, maybe you can convince them that these days cameras don't have to be huge to be impressive. On the other hand I also used a Canon T3i with a prime lens at the wedding and that convinced me to go DSLR for video from now on. However, you've got to get good at manually focusing a DSLR while the Canon will keep things in perfect focus almost all the time. Paul

NewBlue Titler Pro and Activating
Well, unfortunately all New Blue Titler does with my Intel (laptop) graphics card is cause Vegas to crash. Sent the error report. Hopefully 11a will have addressed this. Also, while playing with the ProType titler Vegas crashed. Other than that everything else seems to work so far and am happy with the purchase. I have a bunch of New Blue stuff and there doesn't seem to be any problems with that. Paul

Can't get Cineform clips to work in 11
Well, I guess for now I'll have to go with hazydave's way of dealing with it -- Sony MXF files. Don't understand the technical, "under-the-hood" stuff and don't really want to. It seems if a codec like mxf can work equally well with 9 or 11 the same should apply to Cineform (having paid for it -- vs 1). Cineform's been great up to this time and willing to go back to it -- even upgrade to Neo (for First Light) but until I'm certain upgrading will not be a waste of money I'd better hold off. Meanwhile, really like Vegas 11. In my i5 dual-core laptop I'm getting full-frame, smooth playback of AVCHD and MOV files wihout having to render to another codec. Maybe that would have been true in vs 10 also, but for now I love the speed-bump form 9 to 11. Paul

Can't get Cineform clips to work in 11
Thanks for the info -- not very happy about that. Have Cineform version 1, don't really want to have to spend $250 just to upgrade to Vegas 11 and still be able to use Cineform files. I'll look into this more, maybe contact Cineform, see what they have to say. Paul

60p>24p
You might want to test HDStreamTools, www.cinecomp.com ($90). They do a great job of converting 60i to 24p. The only problem is that you have to feed them AVCHD files, so if your canon is recording as MOV files you would have to convert those to 60p AVCHD before feeding them to HDStreamTools. I've tested the 60i to 24p and really liked the results. They also have an option for 60p to 24p. Paul

Why I like Media Manager...
As far as backing up the library, I think what you're saying is use the "Backup Media Library" menu item, go to the old library, then back it up without opening it. I'll have to try that next time. Paul

I don't know about 2 libraries at once, but I tend to look at it like you. Every time I get a new computer or a new version of Vegas I tend to have problems accessing my old libraries (which are always in the same directory structure) so I just create new libraries. I guess the thing I like most is that I can simply click on a song or sound within Vegas and instantly preview it. As far as categorizing, etc., I do that with directories since, as I said, I've never been able to "keep" my libraries from one computer or version to the next. (Something that may be completely my fault). Paul

Looking for Cineform in Vega 9
I believe the special ended last night, $150 to upgrade plus a training DVD. Thanks for the replies. I do have the Cineform Neo, latest version. Maybe when I get the DVD for Vegas I'll have to uninstall everything, install Neo, then Vegas 9. But for those who use Cineform, I guess what I'm asking is, once I have 9 installed and Cineform installed, will templates show up in 9 so I can render and re-render to Cineform, or do I have to choose some other template and then use Cineform as a custom codec from the drop-down list? Paul

OT: ghosting the C drive.
I've been using Acronis for a couple years. Works perfectly and user-friendly. In the past Norton Ghost was knocked for being hard to configure and use. I don't know if that has changed. I end up reloading my system every 3 or 4 months. Total time to get the system back in perfect working order ends up being 4 or five hours versus a couple days, reloading everything from scratch.

Very nice. I'm getting better at this kind of stuff myself. It's not always easy to get the color balance right.

Ken, I've opted not to use New Blue yet because it almost looks like I can get the same effects from Pixelan Creative Ease. Have you found a lot of value from New Blue that you don't find in Pixelan? Paul

I bought into Cinescore, why didnt Sony
I'm kind of amazed by this where's the Cinescore support attitude from some people. I suppose part of it is that I got a good deal, bought the Vegas 7 and Cinescore package. Just what's there now, the two built-in themes plus the five available theme-packs give you enough for years of varied music beds. They certainly don't cover every mood or possibility, but they do already cover a lot. If no more theme packs come out (I'm sure more will arrive) I'll feel my money was well-spent. I'm not a professional but I try to make my extended-family movies as interesting and professional as possible. I'm finding that Cinescore almost always seems to have something that fits the occasion and Stock20.com provides the rest. (I've even broken down and paid $40 for one song at Shockwave-Sound.com because it so perfectly enhanced the mood I wanted to present in my niece Linsey's movie of her year in Europe). Like others I'm just thrilled with Cinescore and hope they can continue to successfully market it and make a profit on it.

OT: Wide Angle Lens
I don't have a wide-angle at the moment, but was thinking about getting one again because, as Riredale says, a .7 or .8 definitely makes stabilizing video easier and it's great for indoor closeup stuff -- also not too distorted at that width.

Tons of wonderful filters to play with. Like TeeJay Rise and Shine has revolutionized my titling. I also like their chroma-warp filters that let you play with overall coloration and look, and their film-look filters. There are lots of other great filters that let you create special looks and interesting transitions. Plus every filter is infinitely customizable.

I'm with DGAtes on the one mile over analogy. However, out of pure cowardly fear I'm buying affordable Royalty Free music. If I was a professional wedding videographer I might be tempted to join the Bluecore Media crowd and take my chances, but the thought of someday someone deciding to make an example of that random "little guy." makes me quake in my boots.

27 Live Music Edits in 3 1/2 Days, I love Veg
Muttley, I haven't even looked at your website, but I remember something you posted on Vegas Users 3 or 4 years ago and I loved it. I haven't kept up with you but congratulations on continuing to advance your skills and knowledge. I'm just a hobbyist, but I think I love editing video in Vegas as much as you. I used Premiere for several years, discovered Vegas 3 and never looked back. When I look at how far this inexpensive NLE has come since that time I'm astonished by what I can now produce with it. Not only have my skills increased considerably (mostly thanks to the great contributors like DSE, John Meyer, Johnny Roy, Glenn Chan et al) but the NLE has continued to improve to make getting what you really want quicker and easier. I think the reactions to Jaydeeee's post have been because of the slightly snobbish tone he took to your exuberance about the NLE this forum is all about. And then it becomes obvious it's all about snobbery when he finds it necessary to defend himself by inferring that DSE's work isn't as good as yours when DSE defends you. Personally I'm excited when I see someone has come so far with Vegas. Yes I'm a fanatic and not a professional. For those who are, like Jaydeeeee, you need to exersize some discretion and common sense and realize your audience. Your prescription may be perfect for you and other professionals, but certainly not for every professional -- for example, Muttley!

OT: DVD Authoring Software - DVD Architect?
Are you saying you couldn't then, but you've figured out how to since then? Or just that you can't at all? BStro (Rob), I wish you could rearrange things like you can in Firefox (favorites). In order to rearrange things in DVDA you drag the item to the top level and then it rises to the top. I would like to be able to drag it above another item and have it stay there, but unless you or someone else can clue me in I haven't been able to do that.

OT: DVD Authoring Software - DVD Architect?
I found several things unintuitive about DVD Architect in the beginning, like the outline of menus and files on the left and the fact I couldn't just easily rearrange them where I wanted them. However after reading the help file a little and experimenting I then found it the easiiest DVD authoring program I've ever used and it keeps getting better. So spend a little time with the trial.

Thanks, Dave, Grazie and Patryk. I want to experiment with this some. I use a few filters on my camera occasionally, but I'm always looking for some way to make things "pop" and this deserves experimentation.

Ok, I need help! What is grading? What were the two nearly black pictures? Were they overlays that were made nearly transparent? I'd love to have the process explained a little better. But no matter what you've made me want to experiment now with overlays!

cropping video on render
This may not be at all what you want, but you could use the bump map tool to cast a spotlight on the person, effectively blacking out what is to either side of him (using levels to keep the person from becoming overly bright. I recently used this to "highlight" my niece playing guitar in the center of the image, which caused the distracting things in the room to fade to black on either side of her. When you said you didn't want black borders I assume you meant you didn't want cut and dried vertical black borders to either side.
