blink I am going to have to seriously disagree. The HD DVD camp has decided to go with a fixed XML-based menu system. This is not expandable, flexible or configurable enough to create the dynamic kind of content that will set future HD movies apart from the current DVD crop. The BD camp on the other hand decided to include a complete general-purpose programming language in addition to the simple menu system. The Java route is far more flexible, and it allows me to put far more interesting content on a disk than I can with a fixed, non-configurable XML markup system. blink Dude, Java on BD is not supposed to do anything but play different movies segments, display stuff on the screen, interpret user input from the remote and act according to the users wishes by displaying movies or other stuff on the screen. All the capabilities to do this is required just to build a basic BD player. Java doesn't need anything else. What on earth would you need to create a nice menu system that is not already available on a BD player? You, and the journalist who wrote this article, are pulling ideas out of your azzes. blink Nope, can not be the video end. The device can play a BD movie, therefore it can paint stuff on a screen. Nothing else is needed. It can not be on the memory end, a decent amount of memory is required to decode H.264 movies, and also run the menu system, so it can't be there. What other places can you imagine? blink Ah, but answer this one carefully, will the PC still play CDs? Will media player still work perfectly fine? Absolutely. Pulling the sound card will prevent me from hearing sound, but it will not prevent applications that emit sounds to function, they will just not emit any sound. They will still run perfectly fine. Why do you think a Java application would be different? blink It isn't? I thought it was. So, what hardware that Java is supposed to control do you think is not there? Java is supposed to do a handful of things. It is supposed to display stuff on the screen. Can that be done. Yes. So a check in that check box. It is there to get input from the user, typically through the remote control. Is that feature there. Again, yep, it is. Another check. Thirdly it is supposed to direct the BD player to play a particular part of the disk, is that feature available in any BD player? Absolutely, otherwise they wouldn't be able to play movies. Another check. The BD-J system is there to show stuff on the screen. It can also be used to pull stuff of the net, but as with the Tosh HD DVD players, if internet is not available to the player, it will have to fail gracefully, that is, it has to keep running, but just not show the content that should have been downloaded. This is a movie system dude. Used to play movies. Java is used to control the playing of these movies. Nothing is missing. If a BD player can play movies, all the hardware needed to run Java is present, and all the hardware that the Java application should be able to control is also present. This is only about showing stuff on the screen, remember, and any BD player has to be able to do that. So, use your imagination, what can you imagine is not there? Anything?

blink: Keep stating the blatantly obvious please. But hey, that's fun. Rain is wet. Anyway. Yes, specific hardware carries out specific tasks. The tray mechanism is used to pull the tray in and out, the spin engine spins the disk etc. In all, the drive does the following: It spins up a disk, focuses a laser, uses the laser to read data off the disk, runs software to process the data on the disk. The data can be menus, movies, sound etc. The processing includes feeding the data to the appropriate DSP etc. In order to accomplish these tasks the player has a general CPU, one or more DSPs, RAM, ROM and probably quite a few more components. The data on the disk can be anything, and what the player does with that data is entirely dependent on the software that sits in the player. The data can, for example, be a Java application, but in order for the player to be able to run that Java application, it will need a Java interpreter. To add a Java interpreter to the firmware in any sensibly designed player you need to upgrade the firmware, usually in an EPROM somewhere. That is a software update and can be accomplished over an internet connection or by inserting a special disk into the player. If a player is upgradeable, it should be possible, with no major effort, to add a Java interpreter to the player. It is only software. If you have a generic computer (which these players have) it can run Java. There is nothing in Java that requires hardware above and beyond a generic computer. Any generic computer can run Java software. Your statement is that the player needs a hardware upgrade to run Java. Can you please elaborate on what you think that hardware might be? blink This is pure rubbish, but I think you know that. If I remove my soundcard from my PC it will work perfectly. If I remove my fire wire card from my PC it works perfectly. I have a PC in my bedroom that doesn't even have a graphics card, it works perfectly fine as my file, scan and print server. blink Ah, but this is the crux of the matter. As you point out, a BD player needs a CPU, memory etc to run the software that is needed to play a BD disk. Omit one of the components, and it can not run this type of software and it is no longer a BD player. The problem for you is that Java has no requirements above and beyond a generic computer, which any BD player must be. So, if a player can run BD disks, and it is software upgradeable, then it can be upgraded to run Java software. It's that easy. If it can run software, it can run Java. Simple as that. Java has absolutely no requirements outside of what any software has. None. If you had been knowledgeable about Java, you would have known this, and you wouldn't have persisted in stating something that (proabably a very ignorant) journalist said (they are all pretty ignorant) was absolute irrefutable fact. You see, the facts as presented by the journalist made no logical sense, and you should have noticed that and shut up about it. On the other hand, if the player isn't software upgradeable, then it is just a badly designed player, and that has nothing to do with BD or HD DVD. You can obviously also create non-upgradeable HD DVD players if you are a bad hardware designer.

blink Noooo, are you sure? Dude, I am a software developer, and I have developed embedded software for these types of devices for years. I know. Now, in a Blu-Ray player there is enough hardware to run software, otherwise the Blu-Ray player wouldn't function. You have stated that the player needs a hardware upgrade to run Java. Can you please enlighten the world on what hardware specifically Java needs to run? Hardware that is not in place in any Blu-Ray player no. Use your imagination.

blink: This is your misunderstanding blink, nothing else. A piece of hardware, namely a player, consists of a few different components. The components are physical and electrical parts that read disk etc. These are again controlled by what is often called firmware. The firmware is software that is embedded on the device with certain types of media, ROM, EPROM and various newer alternatives. Some of this firmware is upgradeable, some of it is not. The main reason firmware didn't use to be upgradeable was that it was a lot cheaper to create ROM than easily upgradeable firmware. This is still the case, but upgradeable firmware is a lot cheaper than it used to be. This is why, for example, most DVD players of just a couple of years back were not upgradeable. They also didn't have to be, the DVD firmware has been functioning well for years and years, you don't really need upgrades. Todays players come with upgradeable firmware. This is particularly the case for BD and HD DVD players, since these standards are still in a bit of flux. It is also far more user friendly to have an upgradeable player. The fact that you have an upgradeable player however, doesn't mean that most people will, or even know that they can upgrade their player. It takes a call to the producer, a connection to the internet or something like that to enable an upgrade. BD players released earlier this year came with firmware that is upgradeable, but it doesn't include Java. Anyone who buys this hardware will not be able to play BD-J disks. That doesn't mean that it is not possible to upgrade these players to play BD-J disks, but currently their hardware (with the associated firmware/software) can't play them. An upgrade from the supplier should enable them to use BD-J disks, that is, unless the player was made by someone who decided that upgrades of this kind were not needed. It is only a matter of software, not hardware, but is the software embedded in their player, or hardware if you wish. So, yes, blink, your understanding of this topic is flawed, and you read an article that you do not understand, and you use it to further enhance your lack of understanding (not a good thing to enhance) of the topic. The article is correct, their hardware is currently not capable of making use of a BD-J enabled disk. That doesn't mean it is not upgradeable to do this. If it has an internet connection or in other ways have the ability to upgrade its firmware/software, then it should be easy enough to upgrade these players. The download, depending on what CPU is sitting in the player, should be less than 10 megabytes. My criticism of you has been proven correct through your latest posting blink. You talk with huge amounts of confidence about things you actually do not know anything about. You are quite clearly not a technical person, and your grasp of this kind of technology is tenuous at best. If you want peoples respect, don't talk with this amount of confidence about topics on which you clearly have extremely limited knowledge.

Question About V8 And The OS
Screen drawing is an area where Vista has offloaded things to the graphics card, and in this respect, Vista should perform better than XP. This was a good thing with the Vista upgrade. Sadly it appeared that Microsoft wasn't thinking as clearly with other aspects of the OS. In most other cases Vista seems to have taken, at times a significant, hit in performance over XP.

Whether a player is upgradeable or not is a design issue, in other words, if the player was designed in such a way that it could be upgraded, than it can be upgraded, if it was designed in such a way that it can not be upgraded, then... this is irrespective of the technology used to read the disk in the player (in other words BD or HD DVD). If a player can be upgraded, it can be upgraded to run Java applications, obviously. If it can't it wasn't upgradeable in the first place. The ability to run Java or not is 100% a software issue, it is not, and can not possibly, theoretically or practically, be a hardware issue. There is no hardware required to run Java. Now, if you think that this was a hardware issue, it would be interesting to see you explain what kind of hardware you think is required to run Java that is not available in these BD players. blink Clearly a lot more than you on such things in general. What hardware is required to run Java? Please enlighten me. Now - a little bit about my background before you start: I used to design, develop and later sell licensed software of the kind that the call "embedded". Are you familiar with the concept of real-time embedded software? It is the kind that you install in, for example, DVD players to play DVDs, cars to run their diagnostics software, telecom switches to route traffic etc. In other words, I used to design the kind of software that goes into BD players, but obviously not for the BD players since I moved on from that type of job about 6 years ago, and there were no BD players at the time. I did two car systems where the system had the ability to read a DVD. If you burned a DVD with a BD-J menu system on it, I would be able to upgrade both of those car systems to run the BD-J menu system, but I would not be able to upgrade them to read a BD-J disk. That is the difference between a hardware and a software update. I can upgrade the software do do anything you want with what comes off the disk, but I can not upgrade it to read disks with a physically different structure. So, if someone tells me I need a hardware change to process data that is on a disk I can already read, I allow my self to seriously doubt what that person is saying simply because it makes absolutely no sense at all. From a pure technical standpoint. Oh, and a movie on a BD or HD DVD disk is just data. If my player can read that movie, the player can read anything else on the disk and process it. So, again, since you claim to know so much, enlighten me to exactly what it is of hardware that is needed to run Java. That is, assuming the player is upgradeable in the first place. blink I have generally commented on your ideas and how they are presented. If you don't like my commenting on that, you might want to think about how you are presenting things. Let me use an example: A PS3 is, by definition, a BD player. It cannot be viewed as anything else by any person that is remotely knowledgeable. Debating whether it is or is not a player is something that would clearly be absurd, and holding the view that it isn't a player, in the realm of the insane. Note, I am not saying you are insane, not even hinting at it. I am just pointing out that stating that something that clearly is true might be false is absurd bordering on insane. If I offended you with my previous statements, I am sorry, truly. The "sad and pathetic" statement was absolutely crossing the line.

Question About V8 And The OS
Vista requires far more resources for its basic operations than does XP. This would typically mean that any software is going to perform worse on Vista than on XP. The exception would be if Vista has new features not available to XP needed by the software to take advantage of advanced hardware. As far as I know, in the video editing realm, there isn't anything Vegas takes advantage of on Vista that it can not do on XP. That would logically mean that Vegas on Vista is going to perform, at best, as well as on XP, more likely its performance will suffer slightly under Vista compared to XP.

Laurence I have no doubt that what you are saying is correct, but this baffles me. Any player where you can upgrade the firmware should be upgrade to be Java enabled. This is just software after all, so why they are not upgradeable eludes me. Do you know the technical reason these players are not upgradeable to BDJ?

Knowledge of any specific topic and intelligence are not in any way correlated. Sadly, a lot of people think they are, and they tend to brand people with a lot of knowledge as "intelligent". There is no correlation. If you had been intelligent, you would have known that. Your statements about what Java is also leads me to believe that you do not have a lot of knowledge about Java. As you point out, Java is a programming language, but you seem to believe it is somehow Internet related. It is not. Java is a general purpose programming language like C/C++, Fortran etc. This means that you write any application to do anything and run it from a Blu-Ray disk. This is infinitely more flexible than the HD DVD scheme. That was my only point. The Java route is so much more flexible that it counts in the "Advantage" end of Blu-Ray. blink The problem is that this point of view comes from a point of ignorance. More flexibility is always better than less flexibility, both for the studios, you, me and the consumer. Blink And of course, being an utter HD-DVD fan boy, you take the Paramount message, paid for by Toshiba, as gospel. The Paramount statement is, quite frankly, pure at utter bull***t. Of course paramount will not hire programmers, why on earth would they? That is what software companies are for. Paramount will not develop the software, they will license it. Hardly anybody develops their own software these days. blink Java is trouble free, and it has been for almost 10 years. The average Joe doesn't, and shouldn't have to, know how to use it. Why do you think they would? Excel is written in C++, do you need C++ knowledge to use Excel? How about word? Software developers develop software. Companies license the software. The average Joe uses the software. blink You really have no idea what Java is, what it can do, how it will be used, or anything else about Java and BD, do you? The statement over is one of those statements that so elegantly shows that the person who utters it has no clue what he is talking about. Can you try to elaborate on what it is you are trying to say above? Why is Java on Blu-Ray relevant for a data dvd? In fact, I have never sayd that HD DVD burning is not a proven technology at all. What I did say was that a general purpose programming language, like Java, is infinitely more flexible as a menu, configuration and anything else you can think of, system than is markup. Theoretically, practically and in all other ways, the Java capabilities of Blu-Ray makes it more flexible than HD DVD. Note, I am not saying HD DVD will not work, why would I say that, of course it will work. It will work very well. I am just saying that it will not offer the disk production companies as much flexibility as will a general purpose programming language. blink: " Sigh. Talking to children is so hard at times. Yes, you are absolutely correct, the PS3 is very expensive as games consoles goes. It is however, cheaper than a comparable XBoX 360 with an HD DVD player add-on. Depending of course a little bit on where you buy the different missing pieces to make the equivalent. The PS3 was also not intended as a games console only, and that's OK. It sells reasonably well, not stellar, but reasonably well. It sells far better than all HD DVD players combined, for example. blink: I HEAVILY support HD DVD for one reason only... it contains a cheap and effective burning aspect. The PS3 plays HD movies off regular DVDs. The PS3 is by far the most widely sold Blu-Ray player. Do you really think that other Blu-Ray manufacturers will not duplicate this feature? How would they otherwise compete against the PS3? It also looks like the Blu-Ray group will add similar features formally to the Blu-Ray standard soon. How would I deal with that right now if I was a Blu-Ray manufacturer? Easily, I would make sure that a DVD, burned with the same folder structure as a Blu-Ray disk, plays like a Blu-Ray disk. It would be idiocy not to do this. They will. Given the higher data capacity of BD, there is still no doubt which is the better format for a computer user.

Well firstly, you seem to be under the impression that Java systems will work when it hasn't even been tested yet, and second you seem to be under the impression that Java will be a set standard across the BD board. And to top it all off... distributing data on an optical disk is little more than a pipe dream. ================================ This is just sad really. Really sad. Are you so much of a fanboy that you have to make up rubbish just to stroke your own ego? 1 - Java in embedded systems is a well-proven technology, and including it on a player is not a problem at all. There is a chance there will be minor problems here and there in the start, there always is with technology in new devices, but claiming this is a huge problem is just childish and ignorant. This isn't hard, and it has been done in millions of devices already, Blu-Ray and other types of devices. 2 - Claiming that distributing data on optical disks is a pipe dream is so insane I am not sure what I can say. I have a library of Digital Juice products, for example, that I have purchased, all as data distributed on optical disks. My Windows XP version is distributed to me as data on an optical disk. Your comment shows that you are either astonishingly ignorant, or that you have serious problems explaining what you mean. ================================================= That BTW is the biggest joke of all... the PS3 is the best "player" that the BDA has... and it's a frigging game console. That in itself sums up quite nicely the disorganized disaster the BD leads. ================================================= Well, that just shows how incredibly slow you are in the head. In these modern times a system that integrates the entertainment options in a home is the way to go. The PS3 is a great integrated media center, as a games console it has yet to prove it self. As a media center it is by far the best product out there right now. Never have I seen such a fan-boy straw-grasping in my life. I totally agree with many points in this article, but you didn't really read what I wrote, now did you? I use my DVD drive for more than making movies. I use them to distribute data as well. No matter how you look at it, 25G is more, and therefore better, than 15G. No matter how you look at it. Anything you can do on an HD-DVD disk you can do, in a different way, on a Blu-Ray disk. Blu-Ray supports the inclusion of full-blown Java applications on the disk it self. You can write software in Java that does things that can not possibly be accomplished using XML markup. With a general purpose programming language available on the box, you can do with a Blu-Ray disk anything you can do with a regular computer. That is not the case with HD-DVD. It is not FUD that the Blu-Ray disks have higher storage capacity than HD-DVD, and for that alone I would go for Blu-Ray. That alone makes the format far more versatile for me as a computer user. It is also not FUD that a Java-based system is infinitely more flexible than a markup based system. "If I buy into HD DVD, i will get a solid guaranty (no matter the price of the machine) that it will play HD DVD, 3xdvd, dvd-r, AVCHD... and more." This is pure and utter nonsense. You don't know anything at all until the burners are released. If you have been around for a while with DVD burners, you will be prepared for the horror of not being able to do half of what you think you will be able to do. Just because it says so in the spec doesn't mean that the burners and players all will be able to accomplish this without problems. Now, if you can point to a single piece of FUD in my post, please be specific, if not, please stop fuming at the mounth, take two deep breaths and calm the eff down.

Let's face it Sony doesn't want to see both formats survive. Now, who does? Who does it benefit? At the moment, it is a huge hindrance to the adoption of an HD format. What surprises me in this discussion is the fact that people are actually siding with the inferior format. If you are a computer or video professional, why would you side with the inferior format? Someone was complaining about price, are you joking? If you are a professional, does the difference in the cost of a burner matter? Given the ingenuity of the typical DVD players today, do you have any doubt that most HD players at some stage will play HD content off DVDs? Why would they not? I use my DVD burner for two main things, creating movie DVDs that I share with people, and for distributing data to friends/colleagues/others. DVDs are tiny for this purpose however. 4G, please. Please give me more, and please don't talk about two or three layers, even today, after years and years, it is touch and go for multi-layer DVD burners, do you think that'll be different in the coming years for HD burners? Blu-ray is the way to go. It is the better format by quite a margin for multi-purpose burners. I want one now. Oh, and Sony, if the prices don't come down by Christmas, you have effed up again and lost the market simply because you were too busy studying your own perfect navel in your ivory tower to actually talk to your customers. I'm sure we'll see nice things next week though. We better. OK, I'll give you 'til the big show in Vegas in January.

Computer crashes while trying to render
A simple, but often very effective way of keeping the temperature down on a laptop is to raise it a little off your desk. The majority of the heat is generated at the bottom of most laptops, and when it is sitting on a desk the heat may, or may not dissipate efficiently, depending on the material of your desk. I keep my laptop elevated slightly on two special made thin pieces of wood, and it keeps it significantly cooler. When I am traveling I put two magazines down, one on each end of the laptop, just to elevate it slightly.

Big Screen TV Recommendations / Deals
I got the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD a couple of months back. This is an excellent TV in my opinion. Great picture on the 1080p screen, but as with most HD TVs, upscaling is only OK. If you want to watch a lot of DVDs, I'd recommend a good up-scaling DVD player. Oppo is good, so is apparently the PS3. The TV has tons of inputs, decent speakers, and as I said, very, very good picture quality.
