Rendering MPEG-2 for DVDA
Thanks for the replies... One question about audio - is it recommended to render the audio as an AC3 or should I try a .wav? (edit project properties in DVDA to configure audio as PCM Stereo, 24-bit, 48Khz and render from Vegas as a .wav). My film is only 7 minutes long, so I'm not constrained by space.

Uncompressed or DNxHD?
Here's the file settings for my m2t files (as provided by MediaInfo): 25Mbps, 1440x1080 (16:9), at 29.97fps, MPEG video component version 2,(Main (high @1440)) BVOP Here's what it reports for the .mov generated by DNxHD: 220Mbps, 1920x1080 (4:3) at 29.97fps, VC-3, DNxHD I'm not sure where it got the 1920x1080 frame setting from, though. In the frame size box, I had custom frame settings of 1440 x 1080 with a PAR of 1.333.

Yes, it's HD (shot on the FX7). "Be sure to select the right bit depth and color levels for your originals" In the DNxHD drop down I chose 1080i-59.94 220 10-bit. I selected the RGB color level and no check for alpha. Does that look right? Also, is DNxHD a lossless codec? It doesn't seem to be since it's smaller in size than the uncompressed version...trying to see if I can avoid doing any compression where applicable (especially since it's going to be applied while exporting from FCP as well...)

I click on Save As, select (QT 7 mov) --> Custom. I'm on the video tab. I don't see a video format tab. What are the avid codecs called... avid* something?

I see the following under mov templates: Default Template (uncompressed) 28.8 Kbps Audio 56kbps Video 100 Kbps Video 256 Kbps Video 512 Kbps Video 1Mbps Video 3Mbps Video Are these the Avid codes?

Still doesn't work... I just searched for all avid* files on my hard disk and saw that there are some associated with QT Components (they sit under c:\program files\QuickTime\QTComponents) - avidAV1XCodec.qtx etc...but these were installed last year (as part of QT 7.6.2 install) and should be different codecs, right?

Making changes to text event presets
"Sounds like you want different text with the ability to change other values in all the titles created with a certain preset" That's exactly what I want. I created a reference copy of an event, right-clicked on the keyframe for the first event, copied it, pasted it in the next event and changed the title in the 2nd event - however that changed the title for both events. I'm clearly doing something wrong...am I missing a step?

I experimented with the settings a bit and this seems to look quite better: width: 1280 height: 720 Profile: main frame rate: 29.97 NTSC Field order: none (progressive) Pixel aspect ratio: 1.00 Number of reference frames: 2; use deblocking filter VBR: Max 10Mbps, Avg 5Mbps Video render quality: best audio: 44.1k, 128kpbs (audio tab shows 6kbps, but I believe that's a V9 bug?) These settings resulted in a file size of 162MB for about 5 mins of 1080-60i Are there other things I can tweak to further improve quality? (bitrate?) Thanks.

Settings for rendering mp4
I'm trying for 640x480 output. However, I don't have to specify this in the frame-size parameters in the custom render box, right? (that says 1440 x 1080). I also have field order set to upper first. I tried a constant bitrate setting but for some reason that setting doesn't show up in the 'description' part of the render box - only changes made to the average VBR setting show up in the 'description'. Should I be using constant or VBR?

I rendered using the default mp4 template with a max and avg VBR of 768,000. The footage is 1080-60i and the resulting mp4 file is horribly artifacted when I play it using QT 7.6.2 on an i7 system. Same with VLC (I haven't had luck getting VLC to play anything at the same resolution that Windows media player does, though - it's all low-rez with VLC - not sure if I need to set something in VLC's setup) Are my mp4 settings incorrect? This is a 5 min clip. Thanks.

It's 1080-60i HD and about 5 minutes long. I plan on primarily embedding it on my Wordpress powered site but it will be shown on other sites like indieflix.com (which also contracts to amazon.com for viewing on Amazon's independent film channel online) Thanks for any help.

OT: High Quality Music - Your Input Needed
Have you tried magnatune.com ? I've used them before - they're great to work with and they have quite an extensive selection of classical music. I used 8 of their pieces for my last film. I find their rates to be affordable (though they used to be more so, a couple of years ago) and I like their business model.

My projector has an HDMI input, so I could test the video on the WD player in hi-def but I'm really testing the DVD on the projector so as to get an idea of how it would look on other projectors (I'll be submitting it to film festivals). Regarding your earlier idea of displaying the laptop on the projector, I was thinking of getting a VGA cable for that display (I don't have an HDMI port on my laptop but I guess I could get a VGA-> HDMI cable...). I think it would help me decide which variables make the font look relatively less blurry.

Hi Laurence, Not sure if I understood your note about text render. "The text should not be going through any sort of deinterlace filter. It should just be rendering out at the target resolution. For example, if you render an HD 1440x1080i version, load that into a new Vegas timeline, and downrez that to DVD resolution, your text won't be nearly as sharp as if you rendered the SD mpeg directly from the original timeline." What I'm doing is - 1) In a 1080-60i project, I have my video clips. I insert a new track above the video clip and insert generated media on that new track. This generated media is 2880 x 2160. On that media track, I use Protype to overlay my text. 2) I render the .veg project (video + text) as one .mpg file using the MPEG-2 template for DVD NTSC widescreen with interlace set to blend in the project properties. 3) I import that .mpg into DVDA to burn a DVD. I think I'm doing what you're suggesting (rendering the SD mpeg directly from the timeline) but just want to make sure. Thanks..

I have a 1080-60i project with interlace set to blend in project properties. I render as MPEG-2. I tried your suggestion of using Mike Crash's smart deinterlacer in a 30p project and rendering as progressive but that wasn't making a difference in the sharpness of the image (I didn't try it with the text experiments). I wanted to revisit that deinterlacer later, so I moved on to the text aspect.
