Border FX Not Working w/Cropped Images

Andy_L wrote on 8/7/2014, 6:05 PM
I'm re-editing an older project in which I cropped images using pan/crop and then put a border around the resulting image with the border fx. This worked fine in VP9-10.

In VP12, the border no longer fits the cropped image. Not sure if this is a bug or a shift in behavior, but if anyone knows how to get the border to size to fit the post-cropped image, please let me know...

Since it worked before, this may not be the answer, but just in case....

the order of the border FX and the pan/crop affects whether the border is around the cropped window. I think the border should come first, but may have that backwards. You can try changing the order by opening the border FX window and dragging the FX before the pan/crop.

EDIT/Update: after posting the above, using VP 13 build 373 I opened up one of my older projects that was created in VP 11, or maybe 12, that had borders around cropped windows. The borders are not where they are supposed to be. It didn't help to change the order of the border FX and the pan/crop.

I then opened the same project in VP 12 and the borders were where they should be. Could be a bug in VP13?

Hmmm... Working here with a FRESH VP13 B373:-

downloaded VP13 trial, same bad border behavior. Guess I'm going to have to look for a workaround here...

Similar, but possibly unrelated past discussion.

There are different ways to do borders if a workaround is necessary.

OK, here's some weirdness for you: I noticed one of my images was rendering correctly, with the border correctly wrapping around the size of the image.

(to visualize this easier: just think of picture-in-picture on your TV; I'm putting a border around the little picture that is supposed to size to fit)

After going bonkers trying to figure out why this one image had a correct border, while all my others were broken, I realized this one image was rotated slightly.

So, I grabbed one of the broken images in pan-and-crop and rotated it slightly. The border instantly "snapped" into the correct place. I then rotated the image back to where I wanted it, and the border remained correct.

So there's my workaround for an obviously broken feature.

Dear Sony Engineers, please grasp your slide rules in your right hands, and deliver a sharp blow to your left on my behalf. :(

Working as expected here with Pro 12 build 770.

I use 12/770. Try this: put 3:2 jpeg on a timeline in an hd project. add sony border fx. drag the slider to make the border wide enough to see it.

You should now see a border that follows the 16:9 outline of the whole field of view rather than sizing to the 3:2 jpeg.

Open pan/crop, change the rotation angle to 360degrees. The border snaps into place, now fitting the 3:2 jpeg aspect ratio. No?

Confirmed on my system. I show the same behavior using V12 build 770.

I verified on Vegas 12-770. Small but non-zero rotation entries cause the border to snap to the 3:2 picture.

Same behavior in 11-701.

Same behavior in 10.0e.

Vegas 9.0e added the border to the photo inside the 16x9 frame as you expected.

I wonder if the behavior is controlled by some switch whose default changed?

Thank you, Andy L ... a great tip to rotate 360 degrees.

I was just facing a similar issue, and your solution worked perfectly.

Thanks again/
