I have only done this once, so there may be better ways then this:

I dropped the video on the track I wanted it on. The audio dropped in the wrong place, so I grabbed the audio and pulled it down to the track I wanted it on. The video stayed where it was.

There may be better ways.

If all you want to do is send the audio in the trimmer to Track "A", right click the audio in the trimmer and select "Audio Only" from the drop down menu. Then left click the place on Track "A" where you want the audio selection to go and press the "A" key.

It sounds, though, as if you want the audio to go from the trimmer to Track "A" and the video to go to Track "V" simultaneously. I've never found any way in Vegas to do this, unless the audio and video tracks are contiguous.

You might try selecting "Both audio and video" in the trimmer; then select Track "A" on the timeline, hold down the Control key and select the video track Track "V." Then press the "A" key and see what happens.

This comes up a bit for people who've used other systems that lay out the tracks differently. The simple answer is that you can't do it in Vegas without jumping through some hoops.

Vegas always assumes that audio will land in an audio track directly below it's video track. It's not adjustable in any way. The only real solution is to just go along with the way Vegas does it because trying to fight it will drive you nuts.

Vegas's layout scheme is:
V1
A1
V2
A2
V3
A3

Other NLE's might give you
V3
V2
V1
----
A1
A2
A3

Thanks Rob. I'll just adjust to Vegas.
