"call it "crackle", is that the sibilance I'm hearing? "

No, it's not in the final mix/edit, only in the camera original audio.

As I said I suspect in the process of fixing the crackle the other issue was created.
I can get the camera original to sound a lot like the final mix/edit by winding Rx's declicker up to 11.

So you are hearing this crackle/sibilance in the original, I also have the originals, and that is what I'm comparing to too!

Well I did hear some in the Sarah audio but wasn't too concerned. But like Leslie my hearing isn't great. Just what you need for audio recording: two deaf recordists.

just to keep everyone in the loop I had a quick conversation with Leslie. We concluded going right back to the camera original and repeating the process without the audio being touched should not be as challenging as first thought.

Yup, totally agree. Now all that's needed, as I said, is to sync the cuts now. Over to you guys!

well, as ever bob / grazie talked some sense into me.....

however, i'm now looking for a quick fix, along the lines of what i hoped pluraleyes would do.

let's take this as the scenario:

a. i have a single file 'edited master' (with no cuts or reference to original time code)

b. all original camera files.

i could spend an awful lot of time manually matching, but i don't have the time.
i had hoped that i could use pe to simply sync it all up. unfortunately not. all takes simply get pushed to the end of the 'master' edit track.

is there any alternative to pe, or later version (i have 2 i think) that would do what i'm hoping for? dualeyes, or any other software?

Leslie, I'm prepared to try a time saving workflow. To do this I'd like small Lowres of some of the overlapping media.
