Importance of foley?

Isn't it coconuts for horses' hooves? Monty Python's Holy Grail. Foley effects that draw attention (because they don't sound right) are no good. When you can record well the real thing then of course that is great. But at times the real thing isn't as good as the foley. For example, I suggest people stop using that binocular mask (because it's nothing faintly resembling the real thing), but here it is thought to be the only acceptable way of showing a binocular view.

I do have some modern foley FXs from I guess a stock library.
I think I can safely say the art has moved way beyond coconut shells.

You want a car door closing sound?
Which make. model, which door, inside or outside, if outside how far away.

One caveat. Certain natural sounds are amost impossible to reproduce or sound wierd if heard at the wrong levels. Falling water can be a problem. I've found the sounds of sheets and paper being rustled a problem.

And that's why they're called "Foley Artists."

Bob:

You are so right about the massive availability of stock royalty free sound effects. It's amazing. I have been using Partnersinrhyme and the costs are extremely low.

It almost provides the answer to your original question. You need BG/foley, just get exactly what you want and mix it how you want.
