(This is a response to my own analysis of the mirror shots from a couple of posts above, not to the Antonioni tracking shot)
But that analysis doesn't make any sense either, because you see the backs of everyone in the initial tracking shot........There must be another mirror involved beyond the makeup mirrors......that's all I can think of at this point.....and it is probably being moved as well?......the transition from the back of the brunette's head around to the other side, or the other mirror is the trick point.
That's an awesome 7 minute tracking shot from The Passenger. And reading the explanation of how it was done with removable bars and crane hooks is just brilliant. An inspiration. Thanks for posting that.
The other movie with the girls and mirrors [Sucker Punch], well i did spot pretty early on that there was in fact 6 girls not 3 at the mirrors [not really mirrors]. The middle girl gave it away for me by shaking her head to gesture 'no' while the other girl did not. Then i got it.
I think for the illusion to be completely realistic, it takes a large amount of attention to detail. I guess that is the Art of these shots. The effort of fooling us into believing.
This is such a good thread.
Should we start an impossible shot film club? :) anyone? :)

On the shot from the sucker punch, if you watch the girl on the right at the beginning of her shot, her movements do not match the "mirror image"; This looks more like using lookalikes in the first part of the shot and then when the shot goes through the mirror, the mirrors are dropped into place.
Holy Moly! You folks are absolutely right, the "doubles" whose backs you are seeing mean that all they needed were the two-way mirrors as I originally thought.!
All the backsides of the three woman are totally different actors doing live simulations of the real actresses. When they get to the corner, they don't need any other mirrors, the camera just goes around the corner!.....Then they are in real mirror land and can't see through to the other side.
Once they go to the other shot with the woman writing on the chalkboard, it is a completely different setup.
We have come to admire what Ken Burns was doing way back then with stills. In this article he talks about manipulating the audiences. In Sucker Punch we are manipulated to believe the mirror illusion.
