Congrats Dave. My YouTube video on making Naan got 143 views - so there.

Dave, that is an amazing number of views. A few questions. For the life of me I don’t understand the free give away of your hard work. Your video is certainly popular, would you be happier if you were getting paid? A penny, or two per view would look great in your piggy bank.
Will you be able to continue producing videos without a paycheck?
I’m not getting on your case, just curious about how you feel about the situation.

Impressive.
But next time Dave,---no smoking in the studio.
Bad example for younger forum members!

Nice job Dave,

I can see why it has had so many views.

For the life of you...you don't understand?
Umm, because it's not really HIS video?

It's a scene from SWars, with some (AA?) overlays (jobs/chest logo) and some (very bad) sound dubbing in places.

It's just a joke/fun piece for people to enjoy...how could he charge for this? Why would he?
if he re-filmed the whole scene then...maybe, but not this.
It's like a singer overdubbing their voice over a released song...can they charge for that? Not without being sued possibly.

i have a friend who hired me to put SWars-like orchestration to his very funny SWars movie using the orig SWars figures - very cool. Orig story/sound/dialogue...he can't "charge" for that either (but it is fun to view).

SWars will get hits - it's SWars for god's sake.

Jaydeeeee you are being a little bit kind I think with the comment of the overdubbing. I think heinous or nearly unbearable would be closer to the truth, but thanks. As far as the project, it was a release with the first mac-intel and it went big... timing was everything. It was good time for sure, all done in Vegas 6, and more key frames than I care to deal with on something that doesn't pay, but it was totally worth it to have fun and enjoy myself.

A million views! That's great. I loved it. As to why you would do something like that for fun: well, first of all, if all we do is work on our craft, whether it be music, editing, filming, etc., for paid jobs only, you are removing most of the fun in your life/craft. After decades, you begin to dread the doing the thing you once loved and dreamed of doing. I have been there (music) and it's no way to be. Secondly, the current job I've had for 9 years came from a session/concert that I did nearly for free, so, it can lead to paid work, though it is my assumption that was not Dave's reason for doing this. I love so much of the content people post on this forum. As Grazie said, we have some very talented people here! Derek

Geez jaydeee relax. I really am trying to understand the whole free to the world type of work. People spend untold hours working on projects and then upload onto the net.
The world of media production is changing faster than most can keep up to. I'm trying to get handle on how big of an impact this is going to have in my business. Will poorly produced work become the norm (not directed at Dave). How many times have you seen good ol uncle Bob shooting somebodies wedding? That's a thousand bucks out of someones pocket. Meaning your going to have to go look for work somewhere else.
As i said before, I;m just trying to understand. JM

Well it doesn't seem that hard to understand really. Not everything is about money. Sometimes its fun to make something and share it with people without trying to charge them for it.

???

Anybody know what this kid is talking about in reference to this "SWars video for fun"?

A wedding? Keeping up with the times? Poorly produced work?
You relax, I'm not the one confused about these basics.

Look, it's not his video, nor anybody's here. It's a rip out from Swars ep3. with some minor edits thrown in for fun. Fan-made and in humor.
It's Lucas's piece. He cannot "charge" anyone (and...who would he be charging btw? Us? Lucas? Gates or Jobs? ... R u dreaming?).

Look, if Uncle Bob was asked to film the wedding then so be it. If you're basing your career/future on these worries then you may as well get out of the game. A "thousand out of anyones pocket" is none of your business when it comes to somebody's decision about their OWN wedding. It never was your business.

Reality is - it's not putting any "producers and filmmakers" out of work.
If you don't understand THIS by now...then you never will.

BTW: The last time I was interested in anyone's wedding video was....never. It's a very personal product - mainly of interest to the immediate family involved (as it should be).

Jaydeee, you and I are obviously not connunicating very well. I've made my living producing video work for almost 20 years now. Is there a market out there that I'm missing? That's what I'm trying to figure out. Is there a market in this YOuTube phenom. The owners are getting rich at these sites. Is this something to look into, or just blow it off.
Are people going to want their product placed on a site like this? My original question is not about his particular piece per say. It's about the Media for the masses by the masses that I'm wondering about.
I understand he did this for fun. But is there a market we should be looking at? JM

>>>The owners are getting rich at these sites. Is this something to look into, or just blow it off.<<<

Oh...you're talking about youtube and sites like it?
Well c'mon man, your replies could have been read a few ways.

So since the site owners of YouTube are recieving $ (advertisement dollars being the largest form) therefore users should charge?

and what are they charging for?...and to whom are they charging?
And does this video even fit the question? (it's not his video).

I'd bet, if the role were reversed and YOU setup YouTube services, we wouldn't even be seeing this reply here.

YouTube, much like this forum - it's free to join and post your works, it just happens to be the most popular. it's the whole reason this guys video can be seen so easily by so many.
I think it's great. Sure there's a lot of crap out there, but it just makes the more pollished videos look that much better...plus introduces/teaches the video/film/sound arts to more and more people.

And please don't talk to me about years in the biz and "changes" (believe me i know and I hear ya, and I bet you're an experienced editor worth your weight in gold. Many here are...), but change is just something you have to roll with - learn to work with. This really shouldn't affect you. There's room for the YouBoobs of the world and work out there. Plenty.
