OT Am I posting too much?

BillyBoy schrieb am 25.08.2003 um 04:26 Uhr
For those that don't know I develped Bell's Palsy, mainly affected one eye, so for for about the last six weeks couldn't see well enough to do what I normally do; video editing, but its been getting better and while I still haven't done much real "work" (I'm semi-retired so not work, work) I have over the last couple weeks been posting more and more to the forums because I can make the text big enough to see it OK.

So PLEASE be honest with me, you won't hurt my feeling at all. I don't want to monopolize this forum, and a little voice I hear inside my head says I may be posting too much, so am I?

I kind of think so. Am I?

Enthusiasm and expertise from guys like you are GODSEND for the less experienced members like myself, who are also concsious of posting too much.

SO its fair - i can post heaps of newbie questions and you can post lots of expert answer = a valuable forum.

I put the VV forum as my start page to see what you and several others are recommending. You provide valuable insight to many of us that may not post much, but learn from every discussion. Thanks for taking the time to give your expertise. I appreciate it. Best wishes on your health too!

What! Are you kidding! After all you are the "Encyclopedia-Man" ;-)

But seriously BillyBoy I don't think you can post enough for me. I too am a novice to VV4 and I have leard SO MUCH from this forum. I do searches on many topics on this board and most answers I find you have at least have some input on.

I hope your Bell's Palsy improves so that you can continue to take advantage of your talent, I have some friends that developed that as well and most have recovered remarkedly.

Bill,
I have learned a lot from you starting from when you had your former handle. I would be a great loss to this forum and to me personally if you stopped posting. Besides it keeps your mind active and off of your illness (the one I know in my heart that you will fully recover from). I haven't noticed a change in the quality of your posts nor a diminished desire to help others. You are also in one of the few forums in which I have participated that is practically devoid of people with pompous attitudes.
Keep the posts coming.....please!

BillyBoy,

I don't think you are posting too much and I wish you well with your health.
You obviously enjoy sharing and discussing on this board and your posts have helped a lot of people. Far be it from me, to suggest you curtail something you enjoy, especially since the palsy has affected other aspects of your life.

Being honest, I do feel you are a bit of a curmudgeon sometimes. I would ask that when you get that nagging feeling you mention, just take a second and ask yourself, is what I am about to post for the Forum community or am I just blowing off steam.

I hope you fully recover,

Buster

William .. ..

I think your penultimate paragraph says it all for me, "So PLEASE be honest with me, you won't hurt my feeling at all. I don't want to monopolize this forum, and a little voice I hear inside my head says I may be posting too much, so am I?"

. . . . if you're asking the question then you've got an in built reality check going on - yeah?

However, there's always an "however" with me . . . . Maybe you're also asking, " Hey, what would I be doing if I wasn't spending so much time on Forums!?!?" - Are you somehow asking for permission to do something else? Being laid low by a nasty NASTY condition like Bells, can sometimes make me/us "question" our own mortality. You are alive, you are there and at the end of my computer. You aint "just" a font of information. You are alive and you are a person IN you're own right. Validation is so important to us all. Validation through what we DO is always a drug. Once supped, always yearned for. That is the nature of addiction. It's WHO we are not WHAT we do, that makes us human .. .. .. .

So matey, do you want to do something else? What plans have you for the future? Where do you want to take your life from here? - Oh yes . . I can, and do, ask these questions of myself . . . . Why am I going ahead with a particular project? Do I want to respond to a postee, here on this Forum? Editing film aint just the thing I do!

So, validation from me? You got it! Where you wanna go next? That's, of course, up to you. And, if I was sharing a glass of Ice Tea [ wink ] with you we could mull over these weighty subjects until the tea got too warm to drink. Hmmm....

I'll stop rambling now. I'm very, very glad the Bells is subsiding. Know & act on what you want to do next - you DO have your whole life ahead - Go Grab It! It's your birthright - yeah?

My very best of regards,

Grazie

. . . . now, where did I put my other spectacles????

BB...

From my POV I'd say no ... you are not posting too much. The information I have seen is useful and makes sense (and is practical). Plus, you can also tell that you generally very much like the topic and can get frustrated (like a lot of us) with petty bonehead questions/people coming in here just to be stupid (i.e. I like Premiere...I like DVDiT...I like sticking my thumb us my....)

Again, from my POV I like to pop on here and check out the lay-0-the land, learn some new stuff...and add my twisted humor where it fits. Some people in Net-Land still haven't figured that one out (but they are mostly the slow types).

I was working a position a while back where I had seemingly a lot of downtime during the day - so, I pretty much stayed on a board (not this one). So from the unknowing viewer it looked like I pretty much lived there....but hey, it's my dime.

Party on dude!! Uhg...I mean ... Post on dude!!

BillyBoy To post or not to post is that the question. If I wrote a book and put it on the forum people would decide whether to read it or not its up to us. I learnt how to use vegas then got interested in how my camera works and then the picture itself.

At first I did not read your posts sounded too clever for me but its like everything if you learn a little at a time then one day you will know a lot any way now IM apreciating your help because Im understanding what your saying and without it I would never progress and I would always think the professionals have better equipment ect so no In my humble opinion no your not and your posts are always well written and clear.

I have to ask myself why do I bother wanting to make films what am I learning these skills for. I have a dream that I could have a production company and make films perhaps for companies ect but so risky even if you get work its always dependant on the next job I suppose the real reason is because its the creating that is so much fun the end product is not so important as the participation .

I reckon you have to decide whether its enjoyable to you or not because its works for us.

Like everyone else, I would say that you're not posting too much. I, for one, wish you would drop your attacks on Windows as I find they serve no purpose in this forum and distract from your otherwise useful posts.

Geez BB, it's about time you noticed! (kidding)
Actually I hadn't even noticed you were posting more frequently, but if you are I'm glad you are. Every time I read a thread I think "well let's see what BB has to say about it."

OK then...

I'll keep going, but at the same time I'm going to try not to jump into too many threads, because I don't want this to turn into the BillyBoy forum because while I try to give factual information, I know... sometimes I can be like a bull moose when defending what is just "my opinion" on how some things should be done and then I think well maybe others aren't posting as much due to me sometimes coming across like Atilla the Hun or a know-it-all smartass or something. I am just trying to help, but I guess I do come across a little heavy-handed sometimes and I DO like to argue, in case you haven't noticed. <wink>

Points of view are accepted in a democracy and are welcomed everything needs to have an opposite its ying and yang. The more pooled knowledge including opinions CAN help to make a better decision you cant Always be right and you have to know when to realise this and be won over and sometimes both views are right just say your piece then let other participants decide whether your right or someone else knows better.

You have probably watched others go their own way not convinced by your opinion and seen them come unstuck or perhaps even proved you wrong. In the end as free individuals we do what we want based on gathered information.

Opinions are a good thing. Just my Opinion.

Hey, BillyBoy.

Like you, I like to argue. However, I've also found (as it sounds you have) that sometimes it pays to pick your fights. Sometimes I see something in a post and I say to myself "Man, that's a dumb way to do things." However, if I resist posting for a bit, I often find that what I thought was dumb was just different, and may work just as well, if not better, than my way of doing things. Then, if I still have the urge to comment, I try to just offer examples from MY experience, without implying that's how anyone else should do it.

Should you keep posting on this forum? Hell, yes. You have way too much experience and insight to keep it to yourself. I've learned as much from your advice as I have from any other source. And I hope you still mix it up every now and then when you're feeling feisty.

Glad to hear the Bell's palsy is abating. Here's hoping for a full recovery soon.

My concern is not with the quantity of your posts so much as with the tone and technical quality.

There have been many instances where you've displayed a condescending attitude towoward the poster. On other occasions your posts come across as 'whiney'.

While the quality of the VV information you share is generally helpful, a lot of the computer related information you've posted is indicative of fundamental misunderstandings.

While I understand that your computer hardware proficiency is not likely to change, I do hope that you will strive to set a more positive and less arrogant tone in future posts.

Well, you've now been called condescending and whiney, with a fundamental misunderstanding of computer hardware. It's a lie. You're not whiney at all.

Seriously though: Hell, you can say the same things about the Vice President. Only he never helped me understand color correction.

Me too I think BB sometimes bluntness is funny as hell and heck if you can say in less words then we dont have to read as much!!!

Keep it coming Billy Boy!! ;)
BillyBoy schrieb am 26.08.2003 um 04:18 Uhr
I try to be funny sometimes. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. And of course everyone is entitled to their opinion of what I may or may not know. Such things really don't bother me.

What really ticks me off is getting carried away doing something in Vegas and forgetting to go to bed at a reasonable hour. ;-)
