Planar Tracking Motion Not working in VP 17

GerY schrieb am 20.08.2019 um 06:26 Uhr

Developers Why does the Planar Tracking Motion not work, as in this promo, It's time to tell how this should be done. No one on the forum can tell or explain this to me. So I am not the only one .... or does it not work and do we have to wait for an update? Saluting an enthusiastic Vegas Pro user

I'm still testing. So far I can't say it would not work at all but there are some issues which in the end outputs a bad result in many cases. Not sure yet if it also depends on the frame rates used. But of course not any kind of footage and not any area of a frame is appropriate to be used for planar tracking.

The two issues I'm facing are a steady shift of the mask to the frame area applied when the area moves and kind of a slight jitter which varies from frame to frame.

Also I'm not yet sure if the framing of the PiP FX (once you copied the keyframes from the motion track) is properly adopted to the correct perspective. There may be used the wrong reference points of the PiP FX.
If your mask isn't a plain rectangle, using the source frame's corners of the PiP FX to adjust the corner points might cause shifts to the applied PiP.

I need much more testing but I lack good footage.

Here is an example using a trimmed part of the demo clip. The tracking is quite fine until the motion goes backwards.

@Marco. If you agree, I will send my test shots to "Planar tracikng" when I come home.

Marco. schrieb am 20.08.2019 um 14:12 Uhr

Sure.

GerY schrieb am 20.08.2019 um 16:51 Uhr

Marco that is also my result and it seems that the "PIP" is not well attached to the background to be traced. It seems as if it is one meter from it, which causes the "pip" to come loose or move away from the background. Gr Ger

@Marco. here is my test shots.
I want to track flat screen from TV and top of orange box

Fingers crossed

Marco. schrieb am 20.08.2019 um 17:44 Uhr

My tries fail at both. Not sure why. Maybe the problem in the first shot is the screen mirrors to much of the surrounding which moves differently than the screen does. But for the second shot, no glue. Structured surface missing? Don't know. But in both cases my tracked mask is way too much off.

This is sad for planar motion in Vegas 17

GerY schrieb am 20.08.2019 um 17:54 Uhr

So....Planar Tracking Motion in Vegas Pro 17 DON'T WORK.

Disappointing that there was also no response from Magix

I totally agree with this but maybe MAGIX team hard working on to improve and function Planar Tracking

It does work, just not in every case. I was able to successfully planar track some text to a sidewalk curb (I will film some tests later that I can share here) and the text did rotate and all in 3D space like it should have. The example I tested only had a few frames good enough to use for tracking (the rest was a crowded shot full of people walking in front of the tracked area), so I'm going to shoot some better material to test it with later, and if I can get the same effects, I'll record it with OBS and share how I did it.

@Marco. It's nice. Do you make this in VP17?

When yes, can you please share how to?

Marco. schrieb am 20.08.2019 um 21:25 Uhr

Yes, it's VP17 planar tracking.

I prepared the shot by applying a curve and slight sharpening so the surface hopefully would be a better base for the tracker.

I created an oval bézier mask for the inner circle of the flower, set the tracking precision to "high", mode to "shape & location" and keyframe interval to "1". Started the tracking.
Placed the thump-up picture onto a track above, masked it oval with Pan/Crop's masking tool, then placed and resized it with the Picture-in-Picture FX.
Used the given script to copy the motion track data to the PiP FX and finally adjusted the opacity.

Thank you I will try it.

Please share your original shot of sunflower.

Marco. schrieb am 20.08.2019 um 22:41 Uhr

I can't share the original one because it's uncompressed AVI (1 GB) and my upload speed is sloooooow. I could only upload (maybe tomorrow) a high compressed AVC version and this again can cause worse tracking results.

Marco. schrieb am 20.08.2019 um 23:13 Uhr

I made a 6,7 MB version (AVC) out of it. Download, unzip and try. This MP4 is already pre-processed (gamma and sharpness), so it should be ready for tracking as it is (hopefully the H.264 compression didn't destroy too much).

This tv shot is a great test. Mocha will fail this test also if you don't null the screen (or will track poorly). The reflection is too confusing for planar trackers. You instead track only the bezel of the tv, not the actual screen. This is simple in Mocha, but I don't have vp17

I have tried to track the promo movie from vegas with Planar Motion Tracking ...... quite a challenge but I just don't succeed as it is done in the promo. So ...... something does not work or I do not know how to do it and if so I would like to know how to do it. But I don't give up and I hope the developers of Vegas Pro 17 don't do that either.

Ehemaliger User schrieb am 21.08.2019 um 07:38 Uhr

I never consider the first release of vegaspro software, as it's always a beta release that would not be released by other companies. i will trial or buy the first revision but the initial release is usually an abomination.

This is what I say. No success with VP 17 😞

My result with TV. Terrible!

The Vegas Planar demo was probably made in other software.

"The Vegas Planar demo was probably made in other software."

See the result of my earlier post. Tracking in the demo video works quite fine except it needs a re-tune for the backward motion or do the tracking until the dead point and do the backward motion out of the already tracked part. This isn't the problem.

"My result with TV."

We already found that even mocha would fail tracking this reflecting screen surface. Not a good example.

To work well a 2D planar tracker needs a flat, structured surface without reflections, without covering, without color/light shifts, not too high compressed. If these conditions aren't given it makes no wonder such a tracker fails. So better lets focus the cases where it fails even with good conditions given.

I expect the plugin to do what it has to do. And best for the first time.

1. select a tracking object.
2. In the settings I select the method of tracking
3. Start calculation
4. Good result.

It is not my eternal duty to learn unofficial procedures to achieve a satisfactory outcome.

The sunflower test does not work properly with the standard test procedure.
