I have a lot of experience using the GL-2 under low lighting conditions and have been extremely happy with the results. I film bands in bars and clubs using the camera's manual exposure mode. Here are the steps I go through:

1. Zebra stripe level set at 95, decrease exposure when stripes are visible
2. Shutter speed kept constant at 1/30th per second, giving film like look
3. Gain set at 6 db and occassionally to 12 db
4. Camera presets set COLOUR GAIN 0 (unchanged), COLOUR PHASE -1 towards green (to reduce redness), SHARPNESS -2, SETUP LEVEL +1
5. Always, always, ALWAYS do manual white balance

In combination with these settings I also use the VL-3 light when needed.

Hope this helps,
Aldo.

I like the Canon GL series- on full auto I can pretty much always get a decent shot no matter what the lighting. Does really well with mixed daylight/flourescent.

The Sony PDX10, which I've been playing with recently, has really good low-light capability, same with the PD150. My current faves for low light shooting.

Panasonic DVX100 is also cool, esp the 24p side of it. Build in some time to set it up properly, light correctly and you get some killer looks.

No problem, I haven't had a chance to play around with the color correction stuff yet, I just got the camera a few days ago and I am just amazed at what it can do. I have been shooting with basic consumer cameras that I bought 3 years ago, I thought they shot great pictures, till I took a look through the lens on this baby! The only thing that sucks is that I don't have a shoot booked till October 11th so till then I'm stuck shooting my cat, the trees and a parking lot.

I have had the GL2 since a few weeks of it's original release and it has worked great for me (I wouldn't bring it back). The manual settings suggested already will make a big difference.

You may also look up the reviews on the GL2 in Videomaker magazine. They discussed the low light difference between the GL2 and Sony2000. The Sony had better low-light, but it wasn't as good in several other areas. It also gave tips on low-light usage.

Good luck with your camera.
