Video Factory 2 to ULead DVD Movie Factory

Thanks to several people here I have made by first DVD !!! I hooked everything up, got a DVD writer, and it actually works!

I captured and edited in Video Factory 2, then got the plug-in and rendered to a MPEG2 file. I then pulled that MPEG 2 file up in ULead DVD Movie Factory, put some menus and chapters in and then created the DVD.

But, it looks like I didn't need the plug-in from for Video Factory 2. It appears that I could have rendered to a avi file and then pulled that file up in ULead DVD Movie Factory and then created the DVD.

Is one better than the other. At this point I don't even think I care if I "wasted" the $30 for Video Factory 2's plug-in. I got a good editing package in Video Factory 2 and a good authoring package in ULead DVD Movie Facotory, so I am HAPPY. I am just wondering if one way is better than the other

Barb,

Glad to hear you’ve got your DVD burning working. The quality of MPEG encoders varies widely. The MainConcept MPEG encoder is one of the best software encoders I’ve come across and I’ve tried a bunch. There was a time when Ulead DVD MovieFactory used the Ligos LSX encoder, which IMHO, isn’t a very good encoder. I had a video of a school play that had a black curtain as a backdrop on stage and the Ligos encoder made it into a moving mass of pixilated squares. It was unwatchable. The MainConcept encoder did a nice job of smoothly depicting the black curtain. I’m not sure if MovieFactory 2 still uses the Ligos LSX encoder or not. You might want to try it and see. I think you’ll like the results with the MainConcept encoder better. Also you’re saving time by not having to render twice (once to AVI and then again to MPEG) which is another plus for using the MainConcept encoder.

Johnny Roy,
Thank you so much. I will stay with my system of using Video Factory 2 to take it all the way to MPEG2 . . . I like using the better one plus saving time rendering. (I think that is what you said, that the best MainConcept MPEG encoder is the one in Video Factory 2).

This is off topic, but what DVD writer do you have? Is it computer-based or a stand-alone? I'm looking for recommendations on a good one, as I'm considering getting the VF MPEG-2 plug-in and DVD software.

I just got the Sony DRU-500A. It's and internal writer for the computer (for Windows based machines). I wanted something that had flexibility. It will write to DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD-R (etc.) So far, so good. It was hard to find here, however. I guess it has been flying out of the stores quickly.

Thanks for your post, barbnewbie. As a matter of fact I'd been looking for Sony's external version, the DRX-500UL, but haven't been able to find it anywhere locally. CompUSA supposedly carries it but it is out of stock at all the nearby stores. This drive has been getting good reviews, so it is my first choice.

Video factory is better IMO. I tried several variations of ULEAD, they were all terrible compared to VF mpeg2. Have you tried rendering in DV yet and burning to DVD vs a compressed Mpeg2???

other comments-
Thanks for the DVD tip...I am looking at a sony. Actually, I was also looking at buying a new PC to run my home theater. I figure if you can play Divx, mpeg2, dvd, mp3's, why not cut out a lot of the work and go direct from PC to TV?? just a thought.
